West Auckland Nature Tour

Discover the wild west coast of Auckland and the raw energy of this pristine natural environment

Auckland is a city surrounded by nature. On this full day tour, we’ll visit West Auckland – home to black sand surf beaches and some of the best sub-tropical rainforest in NZ.

Starting and ending at your chosen central hotel*, we’ll enjoy a scenic journey west with a local guide before arriving at Muriwai, one of the country’s most iconic beaches.

Famous for its surf breaks and home to a Gannet Colony which starts to pickup with activity in August. Around 1,200 breeding pairs start to return for their annual nesting season. Marvel at the fledgling chicks as their parents put them through their paces. These incredible birds fly thousands of miles across the ocean on a return journey to Australia every year. And their first adventure gets underway when they are only a few months old.

After a fascinating nature walk in this stunning natural environment, we’ll head to a nearby venue for a leisurely lunch. Mid-afternoon, we’ll head back to Auckland city where the tour will end.

Please note – this walk is not suited to anyone with mobility issues or low levels of fitness. Some paths are uneven and can be slippery, so participants need to have good balance and some level of outdoor confidence to enjoy this experience. Sturdy walking shoes and a good quality hiking jacket are required for this experience.

*for anyone choosing accommodation not included in the main programme, drop-off point will be Aotea Centre or the main hotel.
