Kawau Island Day Trip

Learn the early history of NZ and our unique bi-cultural story on this full day tour to a stunning island location

Kawau Island is one of the most interesting islands in the Hauraki Gulf.  Rich in Māori (the indigenous people of NZ) and European stories, a visit to this island reveals many aspects of NZ’s youthful culture.

Enjoy a guided tour of Mansion House, home to one of our most influential colonial leaders, Governor Grey. Friends with Queen Victoria and many leading figures throughout the British Empire, Grey led a life unknown to most New Zealanders of his time.

He was Governor of NZ twice and although a controversial figure in our history, his story and how he lived here on Kawau Island in the latter part of his life is a fascinating and important slice of our history. Considered one of the grandest Victorian homes in NZ, Mansion House has been fully restored and features original furniture and the library Grey used during his time here.

Lunch will be served in the grounds of Mansion House overlooking the beautiful bay and surrounding area before we return by ferry to the mainland. This tour starts and ends at your chosen Auckland city hotel*.
