Rangitoto Island Hike & Picnic

Get the heart pumping on this hike to the summit of Rangitoto Island, a nature reserve located just 20 mins from the city

Auckland is a city of volcanoes, with 53 cones identified to date. Most are extinct, some dormant.

Rangitoto Island is the youngest volcano in the Auckland volcanic plateau, last erupting around 600 years ago.

It’s near perfect cone shape has become the iconic natural landmark of the city.

It’s clearly visible from the city, beckoning visitors to come and explore. As well as the remarkable black lava flows still in their natural state, the island has lovely rainforest and plenty of native birds. A nature lovers haven just 20 mins from downtown Auckland.

After a short ferry ride, we’ll land on the island and enjoy a hike to the summit. The views are spectacular and well-worth the effort. With no running water, no shops or permanent residents living here, it’s important to be well-prepared. Local hosts will accompany you to the island for your safety and enjoyment.

After a picnic lunch near the ocean, we’ll head back to Auckland city by ferry mid-afternoon. This tour starts and ends at your chosen Auckland city hotel*.

Please note - the hike to the summit is strenuous and not suited to anyone with mobility issues or low levels of fitness. Due to the black basalt rock on the island, temperatures are typically higher here than on the mainland and walking surfaces are largely uneven and can be slippery. Hiking boots, backpack and a good quality hiking jacket are required for this experience.
