ASUM will be running a half day pre-conference workshop on Thursday 9 October from 12:30pm.

Learning Objectives

On completing this course learners should be able to:

  • Understand the clinical role and limitation of lung ultrasound
  • Demonstrate the ultrasound techniques required for scanning and image optimisation of the lungs
  • Identify the normal sonographic anatomy and artifacts: chest wall, ribs and costal cartilages, visceral and parietal pleura, pleural space, lungs, diaphragm, liver, spleen, and heart
  • Recognise pathology including pleural fluid collections, pneumothorax, pulmonary oedema pulmonary fibrosis and consolidation
  • Describe artifacts which are crucial for lung ultrasound interpretation
  • Evaluate the anatomy and function of the diaphragm, specifically diaphragmatic excursion and thickening on ultrasound

Course Prerequisites

  • Completion of the Applied Physics in Ultrasound unit though ASUM.

Course Prework

  • ACEM Foundation Lung Ultrasound Module
  • ACEM Extended Lung Ultrasound Module

Faculty: Dr Sierra Beck, Dr Jacques Loubser, Rex de Ryke

This hands-on musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK US) workshop provides practical demonstration and hands on practice.

Stations will review diagnostic scanning techniques, probe placement and identification of anatomic structures across four anatomical regions. Participants will rotate through four dedicated stations: foot/ankle, shoulder, hip, and knee. Small-group, interactive format with expert guidance and live models.

Audience: Physicians, physiotherapists, and sonographers interested in hands on practice and opportunities for expert guidance in optimising MSK imaging.

Rheumatic Heart Disease Screening Workshop

Sunday 12 October – 11:00am – 12:30pm PoCUS Stream

Abbreviated screening for asymptomatic rheumatic heart disease (RHD) has been shown to increase the identification of highrisk children and enable them to access life-saving penicillin treatment. RHD screening using focused ultrasound is different to clinical echocardiography and has been refined to effectively a single view protocol. In this workshop, we will teach you the basics of RHD screening using the World Heart Federation criteria.

Audience: Suited to sonographers (of all specialties) and doctors, nurses and allied health professionals familiar with PoCUS. No cardiac experience needed.

Join our intestinal ultrasound (IUS) experts in a live scanning and discussion session focused on IUS techniques, anatomical identification and pathology recognition.

This session will showcase the use of high-resolution ultrasound in the evaluation of bowel pathology, using a model with known active disease.

The workshop will be a small-group, interactive format with expert guidance and live models.

Audience: Clinicians and sonographers aiming to enhance their diagnostic skills in gastrointestinal ultrasound.
