About Us

A Sport NZ event, delivered by Women in Sport Aotearoa and The Shift Foundationthe 2019 Women and Girls Summit was the first of an annual women and girls in play, active recreation and sport event series, over 2019-2021. More than 350 participants gathered for the one-day event at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington. The event series builds on the successful ‘She Moves. She Leads. We Win.’ symposium in 2017.  Recognising the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on travel, budgets, and gathering sizes, the 2021 Summit has evolved to become a digital-physical hybrid, with a national online conference and where possible within
alert levels, regional events.

The 2020 Summit was a success despite COVID-19 impacts. This event tested a co-design approach for the programme which that included three unique Programming Groups. Working into and alongside our Steering Committee and Operational Team, these groups included volunteers with many different skill sets and experiences. We have applied this same approach for the 2021 event.

The 2021 Summit will mark three years since the Government launched the Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation Strategy. The annual event will culminate in New Zealand’s hosting of the 8th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport, from 5 – 8 May 2022 and is one of the 24 commitments made by Sport NZ in response to the Government’s strategy.
