Mr Robert de Castella AO MBE

The Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) was founded in 2009 by Robert de Castella AO MBE, an esteemed athlete with an impressive track record including Commonwealth Games Champion, World Champion, World record holder, Australian of the Year, and a 4-time Olympian.

Since its inception, IMF has been dedicated to enhancing the health and social well-being of First Nations people, laying the groundwork for a stronger, more unified Australia.

At IMF, we envision a reconciled, unified, and healthy Australia achieved through the transformative power of running, healthy lifestyles, Indigenous leadership, and the marathon itself. Our mission is not just about fitness; it's about celebrating Indigenous leaders and their achievements while fostering a culture of health and unity.

Our strategic approach revolves around driving positive health, social, and economic outcomes for both current and future generations of First Nations Australians. Through empowerment, education, and support, we aim to cultivate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals as change leaders, harnessing the simple yet profound acts of running and walking to effect meaningful change.

By showcasing the remarkable strength, resilience, and accomplishments of First Nations Australians, IMF endeavours to elevate the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture as integral components of the Australian identity.

Complementing our Marathon program is the I-CAN initiative, which operates in remote Indigenous primary schools and communities nationwide. This program provides children with access to engaging and educational health and fitness activities, fostering school attendance and addressing issues such as childhood obesity and inactivity at their root.

Through IMP and its programs, we are not just promoting physical fitness; we are cultivating leaders, celebrating culture, and building a healthier, more inclusive Australia for all.
