Environmental Law Barrister; President, RMLA
Sally is an experienced resource management barrister who has acted for environmental NGOs, resource consent applicants and government departments on all aspects of resource management and environmental law. During her time as in-house counsel for the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, she was involved in a range of high profile court cases including in relation to the Ruataniwha Dam, the Mokihinui Dam and the Escarpment Mine on the Denniston Plateau. Since moving to the bar she has assisted Ngāti Kuta and Bay of Islands Maritime Park in their efforts to use the RMA to protect parts of the Bay of Islands from the impacts of fishing, and acted on challenges to the Minster of Fisheries’ approach to setting catch limits and on adoption by Waka Kotahi of a National Land Transport Programme without assessing its impact on carbon emissions. She recently acted for New Zealand King Salmon in its application for New Zealand’s first off-shore salmon farm.
Having experience of the many different institutions, fora, processes and perspectives that exist under the RMA, and their strengths and weaknesses, she has an insider’s perspective of what is required from our future resource management system.
Sally is the current President of the Resource Management Law Association.
