Labour List MP and Local Government Environmental Law Expert
Rachel Brooking is a Labour List MP based in Dunedin and Otago with a keen interest in the environment and climate change. Rachel has 20 years’ experience as a resource management and local government lawyer. She understands business, the community, the environment, and good governance. In private practice, Rachel Brooking's clients included tourism, business, councils, iwi, university, and infrastructure projects. Her work for the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment gave her a grounding in policy. In September 2019 Rachel was appointed to the expert panel reviewing the Resource Management System that reported back in June 2020 (the “Randerson Review”). She is committed to planning for climate change with both adaptation and mitigation, doing business better, reducing inequality, and embracing Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Currently Rachel is the deputy chair on the Environment committee and chair of Finance and Expenditure.
