Geoff Reid

Forest Restoration Advocate

Geoff Reid is a change agent and restoration consultant with a focus on urgent action related to climate, biodiversity collapse, forest restoration, human health, animal welfare, and the loss of resilience. He recognises the inherent failure and self-serving nature of government agencies and institutions in the absence of adequate accountability or dedication. He has over a decade of experience working on and spearheading campaigns that have mobilised public opinion, influenced policy and placed pressure on the private and public sector to respect our environment.

Through the power of photography, social media and film making he has achieved several accomplishments, including the establishment of an organisation to protect and restore a rare coastal forest, lobbying for more stringent rules around sediment discharge, coordinating a campaign to expose developers causing harm to the Hauraki gulf and a marine reserve, changing the narrative in NZ about fresh water from technical science jargon to one of values, and stopped illegal hardwood logging in a class 5 jungle reserve in Borneo.

He successfully led a campaign to lobby Greater Wellington Regional Council to get on with predator control for the Akatarawa Giant Rata Forest, successfully stalled a government-funded project to build a marina and dredge sea bed in the Bay of Islands and was instrumental in getting a 20,00ha 1080 drop for Waipoua Forest over the line. He has been a key instigator in raising public awareness of the effects of bad practice agriculture such as Mud Farming in the South Island, to stop the permanent damage to pristine New Zealand rivers, harmful animal suffering in mud, and sediment runoff across the country. Geoff’s current focus is creating better tools for driving awareness and accountability as well as advocating for proper commitment towards weed control and eradication to protect our remnant ecosystems.
