Professor Dame Anne Salmond

Distinguished Professor of Māori Studies and Anthropology, University of Auckland 

Dame Anne Salmond is a Distinguished Professor in Maori Studies and Anthropology at the University of Auckland.   In 2013 she won the Rutherford Medal, New Zealand’s top scientific award, and became the New Zealander of the Year. She is a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences in the US, Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, and Foreign Member of the American Philosophical Society.   Dame Anne has a long-standing engagement with environmental issues. In 1990 she became Deputy Chair of the Parks and Wilderness Trust, and in 1999 she and her husband Jeremy established the Waikereru Ecosanctuary in Gisborne (www.waikereru.org). She has served on the Air New Zealand Sustainability Panel, is a Pure Advantage trustee and co-leads the ‘Let the River Speak’ research programme.
