Associate Professor Vinay Lakra is the Divisional Director of Mental Health Services at Northern Health (NH), Melbourne. He is the immediate past President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). Previously he was a Board member of the Victorian Board of Medical Board of Australia and also worked as the Deputy Chief Psychiatrist of Victoria. He also worked as Clinical Director at North Western Mental Health of the Royal Melbourne Hospital for more than 10 years. He is a Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG) and has extensive expertise and experience in all issues related to SIMGs supporting them for progression towards specialist registration. He has extensive experience in development and operation of RANZCP’s changes to assessment and training of SIMGs. He was the deputy chair of the RANZCP’s Committee for SIMG Education and led the reforms in assessments of SIMGs using the comparability framework. Associate Professor Lakra contributed to the Kruk review while he was President of RANZCP. He is a member of Medical Board of Australia’s Specialist IMG Pathways Review Advisory which was established after the recommendations from Kruk review. He also represents IMGs on AMA’s National Doctors Health and Wellbeing Leadership Alliance. He remains actively engaged in supervision and mentoring of medical staff including SIMGs.Assoc Prof Lakra graduated in medicine from JN Medical College, India in 1999 and then completed MD in psychiatry from Central Institute of Psychiatry, India in 2002. He is also a Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators, has a Masters of Health Management from University of New South Wales and is a Graduate of Australian Institute of Company Directors.
