Our Story
Jennifer and Raja grew up just a 5 minute drive from each other, Raja in Merivale, and Jennifer in Redwood. Raja would’ve been a 7th former strolling to St Andrews while Jennifer was strolling to St Josephs in Form 2. It wasn’t until they were both living in Auckland that they met at Chapel Bar on Ponsonby Road through mutual friends. After about a year together Jen moved into Taylors Road where they’ve been living since.
In October 2016 they went to Las Vegas to support Christine (Jens mum) in the International Sweet Adelines Competition. It was before this trip that Raja decided it was about time he put a ring on it. Months before the trip he had secret trips to Naveya and Sloane to pick a ring for Jen. He ended up choosing a beautiful diamond and accompanied it with a keeper ring so Jen could design her own engagement ring with the diamond he had chosen. On a ‘business’ trip to Christchurch Hugh and Raja had a secret coffee together at Merivale Mall where Raja asked permission to marry Jen. Hugh agreed to it and promised to keep it a secret, even from Christine.
Fast forward a few months and Jen and Raja were waiting outside the MGM Grand in Vegas for a bus to pick them up and take them on a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon. While waiting Hugh and Christine walked past. There was an awkward conversation as Jen just thought they were walking past to go down the strip, as did Christine. Jen said to Hugh, ‘you two should come on the helicopter ride’ and Hugh replied ‘oh, ok that’s a great idea’. Once Jen and Christine realised that it was Dad and Rajas plan that the four of them were going to the Grand Canyon, Christine and Jen had a full conversation through their eyebrows, Christine’s eyebrows saying, ‘he is totally going to propose’, and Jennifer’s eyebrows replying, ‘no he isn’t ready yet, don't be silly’.
A limo then picked them up to go to the helicopter port. From there the four of them took a helicopter to the Grand Canyon, landing beside the Colorado River. They all started to stroll down to a jetty on the river, but Hugh quickly stopped Christine from going right down to the water and stayed on the clifftop above overlooking the jetty. Jen, completely oblivious to everything was taking a video from the jetty when she heard, ‘hey, i’ve got a question for you’, and she turned around to see Raja down on one knee, he took her hand, said something lovely and romantic and then popped the question. Through tears Jen said yes. They then popped some bubs and had a lunch on the bank of the river.
On the flight back to Vegas they watched the sunset as they approached the strip. The day didn’t end there, they popped some more bubbles back at the hotel and called family and friends back home. To celebrate that night, Jen and Raja went to Britney Spears followed by drinks and tapas 107 floors up at Stratosphere Tower. It was the perfect day.
They’re looking forward to getting married in Queenstown with their closest friends and family.
