Navigating the complexities of end-stage kidney disease in people with diabetes from risk factors to outcomes: insights from the UK Biobank

1:30 PM - 1:36 PM

Abstract

Biography

My name is Oindrila Kar and I’m a second year medical student at the University of Birmingham. Over the last year, I have developed an interest in cardiometabolic conditions through a combination of this year’s syllabus, as well as a Personal Interest Project I wrote about as a part of my course. In this, I explored some of the key risk factors and consequences of arterial thrombosis such as diabetes and hypertension, and stroke and myocardial infarction. As diabetes plays such a key role in atherosclerosis and macrovascular complications, I wanted to understand the role diabetes played in microvascular complications as well after having learned about diabetic nephropathy earlier that year. This prompted me to engage in discussions about diabetic nephropathy and ESRD and understanding the complexities around ESRD which can be seen in this paper.
