Steven Kahn is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. He holds the Leonard L. Wright and Marjorie C. Wright Chair and directs the Diabetes Research Center at the University.
His research interests include the role of the β-cell in the pathogenesis and treatment of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. He has performed physiological studies and actively participated in several large multicenter clinical trials to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes, which include studies comparing youth and adults. Aside from his clinical studies, he has an extensive basic research program examining the loss of β-cells in type 2 diabetes.
He is the editor-in-chief of Diabetes Care.

Early-life origins of type 1 diabetes: microbiome, metabolites and more

Professor Emma Hamilton-Williams’ laboratory focuses on understanding the role of the gut microbiota in as a potential trigger or therapy to treat autoimmune type 1 diabetes. She uses state-of-the-art 'omics approaches to probe how disturbances in the gut microbiota of children with type 1 diabetes impacts the function of the microbiota, the gut and the pancreas. She recently currently conducted a clinical trial of a microbiome-targeting intervention aimed at restoring a healthy microbiome and immune tolerance, with an ultimate goal of preventing type 1 diabetes. She is using longitudinal birth-cohort samples to understand how the function of the gut microbiota changes across time in early life, preceding the onset of type 1 diabetes.

Professor Thomas Kay is the Director of St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research (SVI) in Melbourne, and Chair of the Australian Type 1 Diabetes Immunotherapy Collaborative (ATIC). He has been a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences since 2016. He is Past President of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (IPITA) and Past President of The Immunology of Diabetes Society (IDS). He is an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and is a clinician-scientist with expertise in endocrinology and clinical immunology. His work focuses on islet transplantation and immunotherapy with the aim to introduce new treatments for type 1 diabetes based on disease mechanisms that can preserve or restore beta cell function.
