A Pacific navigation of academia for improved heart health equity

Biography

Julie Winter-Smith (‘Alaki Fonua/Pelehake, Tonga and Daku, Fiji) is a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland and leads Pūtahi Manawa’s Fatu Malosi Summer Research Programme. Julie completed her PhD in Population Health in 2024. Her doctoral research used Statistics New Zealand’s Integrated Data Infrastructure to explore the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease among different Pacific ethnic groups, including how this differs for Pacific peoples born outside of New Zealand. Julie is passionate about achieving heart health equity for Pacific peoples and building the Pacific heart health research workforce pipeline.

Biography

Katrina is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, University of Auckland. Her background is in clinical cardiac physiology and medical statistics, and her research bridges cardiovascular medicine and health data science, with applications ranging from public health to advanced cardiology. She leads the VAREANZ programme of cardiovascular epidemiological research and is co-Director of the University’s Health Data Platform, which turns routinely collected health data into analysis-ready data for research.

Biography

Professor Rob Doughty holds the Heart Foundation Chair of Heart Health at the University of Auckland where he runs a programme of research related to improving the understanding of the causes, prevention and treatment of heart disease in NZ. He is a cardiologist at the Green Lane Cardiovascular Service, Auckland City Hospital and The Heart Group. Current research interests include the genetic and environmental causes of premature coronary disease, cardiovascular risk management, outcomes and innovative therapies for patients with heart failure, atrial fibrillation and coronary disease
