Biography

Dr Susie Cartledge is a Senior Research Fellow at Monash University and a Clinical Nurse Consultant at Alfred Health in Melbourne. Susie has used her experience in cardiac nursing to research ways to support patients and families with secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Her research focuses on patient/family education, the transition of inpatient to outpatient care, cardiac rehabilitation, health literacy and digital health. Susie is passionate about implementing findings into clinical practice and leverages her clinical work and training in implementation science to achieve this

Biography

Karl is the Team Leader of Cardiac Physiology at Waikato Hospital. His career includes valuable experience working within the NHS at King’s College Hospital and the Royal Free Trust in London. A key focus of his work is improving health equity. He is actively involved in initiatives aimed at reducing barriers to care, including ongoing voluntary work with the Pacific Island Pacemaker Service, supporting access to life‑saving cardiac treatment across the Pacific. Alongside his clinical and leadership roles, he is passionate about developing the cardiac physiology workforce and contributing to stronger, more equitable health systems. Outside of work, he is a father of three daughters and a passionate supporter of the New Zealand Warriors—though he admits it is sometimes hard to decide which role is more stressful.

Biography

Karen Brewer (Whakatōhea, Ngāi Te Rangi) is a kaupapa Māori researcher specialising in speech-language therapy and health equity. She is Co-Director Māori of Pūtahi Manawa | Healthy Hearts Aotearoa New Zealand and a Senior Research Fellow in Speech Science and Psychology. Karen completed her PhD in Speech Science in 2014, following a Master of Speech-language Therapy Practice at Waipapa Taumata Rau and a BA in Linguistics from Victoria University of Wellington. Her research focuses on stroke, aphasia, cultural safety, and Māori workforce development. From 2020–2023, she contributed to the Manawataki Fatu Fatu programme, examining inequities in cardiovascular care for Māori and Pacific peoples using kaupapa Māori and Pacific methodologies. Karen has published widely in health and speech science journals and presented internationally. She has also appeared before the Waitangi Tribunal as a technical witness. Her work is driven by improving outcomes for Māori whānau affected by stroke.
