Over this time, Michael has had a diverse interest in most aspects of cardiothoracic surgery from ischaemic heart disease, including heart failure requiring SVR MV repair CAGS,CRT , transplant and VAD therapies, to aortic and valvular heart disease with recent experience intranscatheter aortic valves and minimally invasive mitral surgery, including the Da Vincirobot and TMVR.
Michael's experience in a transplant unit nurtured interests in basic research in myocardial preservation and clinical experience with mechanical assist devices. The RPAH and StVincents hospital ECMO retrieval program established the role of remote retrieval of very unwell patients particularly during the Swine flu pandeminc in Australia.
Thoracic surgery has also been an active interest with contributions in thoracic oncologyand pulmonary failure requiring transplantation. Michael now works mainly at Macquarie University Hospitals and The Mater Hospital with particular interest in complex high risk structural heart disease, minimally invasive surgery including robotics and surgical education, simulation training and AI and ML research.
