Eagle Technology Workshop

Monday, 9 September, 1:00 - 5:30pm

Real-World Geospatial Solutions for Forestry Professionals

This workshop will delve into the transformative potential of geospatial technology in forest and harvest management. Focusing on practical applications, attendees will gain insights into how new and advanced tools and techniques can be integrated into everyday forestry operations to enhance efficiency and decision-making.

Key Topics:

  • Incorporating GIS in Field Operations: Workflow for using GIS technology in daily forestry activities – from field to reporting.
  • Reality Capture: Capturing real-world conditions accurately using modern technologies.
  • Live Field: Integrating real or near real-time data into forest management operations.
  • Image Management: Discover techniques for efficiently handling and processing large datasets, such as drone and satellite imagery. Learn best practices for managing extensive image data across various areas.
  • GeoAI: We can now leverage artificial intelligence to enhance geospatial analysis and decision-making. But how do we deploy this technology?
  • Digital Twin of the Forest: Creating and utilising digital replicas of forest environments for planning and management.
  • Spatial and Image Analysis: New tools and methods for extracting meaningful information from geospatial data.

Format: The workshop will be delivered in two, 2-hour presentation-style sessions.

Relevance: The focus is on actionable insights and technologies that forestry professionals and organisations can deploy immediately. This workshop emphasises practical, hands-on applications of geospatial technology in forestry and harvest management.

google earth engine Workshop

Monday, 9 September, 1:00 - 5:30pm

1:00 - 3:00pm Session 1: A hands-on introduction to Earth Engine

This session introduces participants to Google Earth Engine (GEE), a powerful cloud-based platform for planetary-scale environmental data analysis. Participants will engage with a variety of hands-on examples to learn how to access, manipulate, visualize, and analyze large datasets including the nearly 100 petabytes of satellite imagery and more than 1000 geospatial datasets hosted in the Earth Engine catalog. Designed for those with little or no prior experience with Earth Engine, this session will quickly bring you up to speed.

3:30 - 5:30pm Session 2: Earth Engine Advanced Topics

This session will demonstrate of a variety of advanced Earth Engine topics, including: how to build and deploy Earth Engine Apps to create dynamic and shareable interfaces, using Earth Engine with Python notebooks and packages such as xarray, and interfacing between Earth Engine with other systems to create a real time wildfire alerting system.

FAO Workshop

Monday, 9 September, 3:30 - 5:30pm

Hands-on Forest Monitoring with the FAO SEPAL Platform

Participants in the workshop will learn how to use the FAO SEPAL platform (sepal.io) to create new and improve existing land monitoring workflows through exercises designed to quickly and easily build optical and radar image composites, perform image classification, analyze time-series information for near real-time change detection, and utilize the high resolution NICFI/Planet data...all without having to code.

Participants wishing to follow-along should:

• bring a laptop
• have a Google Earth Engine user account (earthengine.google.com)
• Have a NICFI/Planet Level 1 account (planet.com/nicfi)
• have a SEPAL account (sepal.io)

For more information on the SEPAL platform see:
