Details
Many within the dairy sector have made GHG commitments for 2030. Time is running out, anything that is going to make a significant difference must be rolling out or just about to. So where are we?
- State of the different areas of science – what do we now know about our ability to reduce emissions long term in dairy cattle?
- Status on vaccines? A methane vaccine offers the possibility of easily adopted methane inhibition that is suited to widespread use in pastoral systems. However, the technical challenges of inhibiting organisms if the rumen is significantly greater than blood born agents. Where are we at?
- What does “as good as it gets” look like in dairy? Is there a limit / is zero possible?
- State of the technology – what is ready or almost ready for use? Animal breeding covering both the genetic basis, approaches to developing the technology and tracking / assessing the benefits as “low methane cows” are deployed into dairy herds.
- Inhibitors and other “technologies” State of implementation – what is happening on farm? How has uptake of Bovaer gone? What is working / not working in driving use? The Danish “experiment” with mandatory use raised several questions about the risks of getting technologies into the hands of farmers at large scale. What were the key lessons? What should we start/stop/continue to do for future technology rollout.”
