Details

Although the term remission is rarely used in the current management of asthma, it is well defined in other chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Remission in adults with asthma is a relatively new and less researched area that has, however, recently gained attention. Since remission is possible as part of the natural history of the disease (e.g., childhood asthma remission), it might also be possible to induce remission with treatments. Developing or identifying treatments that can induce remission in asthma will be a paradigm shift in the asthma management goals. This symposium will address:  Overview of ‘remission’ journey in Rheumatology – from conception to the current ‘treat-to-target’ strategy;  The evolving definition of on-treatment clinical remission in asthma – across paediatric and adult patient cohorts;  Predictive factors of childhood/spontaneous asthma remission and benefits of timely intervention with biologics in paediatric severe asthma to optimise long-term disease outcomes and opportunity for remission;  The latest data supporting achievement of on-treatment clinical remission with biologics in adult severe asthma patients;  How having an understanding of type 2 inflammatory biomarkers can be useful in identifying patients and managing their asthma with on-treatment clinical remission as the goal;  The main barriers and opportunities to attain on-treatment clinical remission with a strong emphasis on the benefits of earlier (timely) intervention and ‘treating-to-target’ with a precision-medicine approach to the management of severe asthma.
