Professor Nikola Bowden is co-Director of the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute Centre for Drug Repurposing and Medicines Research and the Vanessa McGuigan HMRI Fellow in Ovarian Cancer Research. Prof Bowden’s research investigates DNA repair and drug repurposing for melanoma and ovarian cancer. She leads the MRFF-funded Australian Program for Drug Repurposing for Treatment Resistant Ovarian Cancer and several Investigator-initiated clinical trials for treatment-resistant cancers in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Industry. Prof Bowden has previously held Chair of the Australian Academy of Science Early and Mid-Career Researcher Forum; and funding from Cancer Australia, Cure Cancer Australia, Cancer Institute NSW Career Development Fellowship and a NHMRC Training Fellowship.

AI and thoracic radiology – improving patient outcomes

Professor Catherine Jones is a consultant cardiothoracic radiologist, specialising in lung cancer and occupational lung disease. She has practised in Australia since 2011, after completing radiological training in the UK and thoracic radiology fellowship in Canada.
She is adjunct professor at the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine and Health, and associate professor at the School of Public and Preventive Health at Monash University, enjoying a long career in medical research. She has a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics from the University of Queensland, majoring in statistical methodology.
Catherine is an executive member of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Thoracic Radiologists (ANZSTR) and works with medical AI and technology companies to develop clinically useful AI tools for medical imaging interpretation, workflow, and education of doctors and other healthcare professionals. She is the clinical chest lead at Annalise.ai and the chair of AI committee at Australia’s largest radiology company.

Innovative ways to manage NTM

Rachel Thomson is a Professor of Medicine and Respiratory Physician, Head of the Greenslopes Clinical Unit and leads the Mycobacterial Diseases and Bronchiectasis research group at The University of Queensland. Her research covers environmental acquisition of NTM infections, host susceptibility and epidemiology.
Professor Thomson has been a lead Australian investigator on several clinical trials for NTM-Pulmonary disease and bronchiectasis, including two phase II trials assessing novel therapies for NTM, and has served on advisory boards for NTM trial design.
She has held leadership positions within the American Thoracic Society, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Australasian Bronchiectasis Registry and in 2021 established the NTM Australia Research Consortium and biobank.
