Biography

Associate Professor Benjamin Kwan is the Head of Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine (The Sutherland Hospital), Director of Sleep Medicine and Pleural Medicine Lead in St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, and senior staff specialist in NSW Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network. He has extensive interests in the field of smoking cessation and lung cancer, and new models of care in the field of respiratory and sleep medicine. He is currently involved in multicentre studies in the field of smoking cessation, malignant pleural effusions and airway diseases.

COPD and Cardiopulmonary Risk

Biography

Dr Russell a Clinical Reader at KCL London and the Head of the Peter Gorer Department of Immunobiology, and a Respiratory Consultant at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. He is the Clinical Director of the West Hampshire Integrated Respiratory Service, looking after COPD and asthma for 2.5 million people. His PhD at Imperial College was as a British Lung Foundation Research Fellow under the supervision of Professor Peter Barnes. The research focussed on the basic mechanisms of COPD and disease progression in a population of smokers in primary care, and this is a continuing area of study as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial. Dr Russell has just joined KCL from the University of Oxford where his research was focussed on COPD exacerbations, mechanisms of lung damage as well as phenotypes of all airways disease. He is a founder shareholder of Albus health, a spin off company looking at remote patient monitoring. He is an advisor for three other European spin off companies with diverse interests. Where others see obstructions, Dr Russell looks for ways around, over or under. He leads clinical, research and health delivery teams with this campaigning approach. Dr Russell has interests in obstructive lung disease, particularly pathophysiology of COPD and how patients should be cared for across the primary/secondary care interface. He isa member of the British Thoracic Society (BTS) Council and Standards of Care Committee and is active in Asthma+Lung UK. Dr Russell is the founding Editor of the International Journal of COPD (impact Factor 3.2, and is keen to increase the global awareness of COPD and provide a platform for scientific developments from across the world.

Prof Atifur Rahman

How mortality impacts treatment decisions (COPD vs CVD)

Biography

Dr. Rahman, an interventional cardiologist, joined Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) in January 2006. Having previously served as the clinical director in the coronary care unit, he currently holds the position of Clinical Director of Specialist Medical Services at Gold Coast Health. In addition to his responsibilities at GCUH, Dr. Rahman is affiliated with BOND University, where he holds the title of Honorary Adjunct Professor in Cardiology. His academic contributions include co-authoring with Dr Simon O’ Connor, the widely acclaimed book for trainees, "Problem-Based Cardiology Cases," globally distributed by ELSEVIER, earning considerable esteem in the medical community. Over the past decade, Prof. Rahman has played a pivotal role in education, serving as the director of advanced trainees and a regional examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Furthermore, he has taken on the responsibility of being the National examiner for the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). In these diverse roles, his consistent focus has been on advancing the teaching program.

Dr Anita Sharma, the Founder and Medical Director of Platinum Medical Centre, leads a holistic family practice dedicated to personalised patient-centered care. Her extensive expertise spans family medicine, with a focus on women's and child health, mental health, and specialisation in Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Failure, Obesity, and Osteoporosis. Dr Sharma established dedicated clinics for these conditions, incorporating scientifically validated complementary therapies and lifestyle medicine. Committed to education, she serves as a medical educator for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), leading Active Learning Modules in Aged Care and Chronic Diseases. Dr Sharma is also an advisor for medical education companies, mentors doctors nationally, and is an accredited trainer and supervisor for General Practice and medical students. As Editor and Reviewer for Medicine Today, Dr Sharma contributes to peer-reviewed journals, co-authors RACGP handbooks, and participates in National Specific Interest Groups. Beyond medicine, Dr Sharma is a certified aviation medical examiner and medical review officer, showcasing her diverse contributions to the aviation industry. Actively involved in medical women's societies, she champions the professional development of women in medicine, serving as the Queensland Representative to the Australian Federation of Medical Women. Dr. Anita Sharma is a multifaceted healthcare professional making significant contributions to medical education, patient care, and professional advocacy.

Biography

Professor Shyamali Dharmage is a world-recognised leader in Life Course Epidemiology of Chronic Respiratory Diseases. She developed and leads the Allergy & Lung Health Unit, Centre for Epidemiology & Biostatistics, University of Melbourne and has been awarded the esteemed title of Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and four prestigious Fellow titles (Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, European Respiratory Society, College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka, Dame Kate Campbell). Professor is in the top 0.018% among 219,873 all obstructive lung disease researchers worldwide (Expertscape). She has more than 500 publications and has been awarded >$75 million in grants. Prof Dharmage leads an internationally recognised research program and is the custodian and PI of two of the world’s key studies in allergies and lung health;including NHMRC funded Melbourne Atopy Cohort Study and Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study. Her work in lung function trajectories has contributed substantially to the creation of the novel paradigm of pre-COPD. Her recognition of research excellence is evidenced by national and international advisory board invitations such as the Lancet Commissioner in COPD. This COPD Lancet commission provided a roadmap for elimination of COPD including proposing a novel COPD classification. She was also a member of the expert committee that developed the Australian COPD Blueprint and led its prevention chapter.
