Nutrition in pregnancy – importance for prevention of asthma and allergy in the offspring

Biography

Danielle Wurzel is a Respiratory Consultant at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Early Career Researcher within the Allergy and Lung Health Unit, The University of Melbourne and Honorary Senior Fellow at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. She has clinical expertise in the assessment and management of acute and chronic respiratory diseases in children. Dr Wurzel completed a PhD in chronic wet cough and bronchiectasis and her ongoing research investigates the role of early life events in the pathogenesis of paediatric chronic lung diseases. She leads a number of NHMRC/MRFF funded studies and is CIA on an NHMRC Clinical Trials and Cohort multi-centre study to investigate the early life risk factors for lung disease in First Nations (Indigenous) Australian children. Dr Wurzel is a member of several sub-committees and working groups including Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, Lung Foundation Australia and Therapeutic Guidelines Limited.

Biography

Dr Jensen is an Advanced Accredited Practicing Dietitian (PhD, 2013) and Hunter Children’s Research Foundation Peggy Lang Research Fellow at the Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle. Dr Jensen has a demonstrated track record in maternal and paediatric nutrition in respiratory disease, including the management of clinical asthma trials in Australia and Canada. Dr Jensen established and leads a Nutrition Program within a cohort of pregnant women with asthma and their offspring, with a dedicated research stream on breastfeeding and its relationship with respiratory health.

Fostering student agency to make healthy lifestyle choices

Biography

Professor Shah is a Community Physician and Director and Founder of the Prevention Education and Research Unit (PERU), Research and Education Network at Westmead Hospital, Sydney. Her career is devoted to education and research-based preventive practices for achieving health equity in culturally and linguistically diverse and disadvantaged communities. Her work in adolescents in schools promotes health and wellbeing through evidence-based programs and builds leadership skills in young people to self-manage and prevent disease. Professor Shah is a current recipient of the Order of Australia Medal, in June 2022 for her work in community health. She is also recipient of the prestigious TSANZ President’s Award, in recognition as “an outstanding respiratory health advocate”. Professor Shah has been on several committees of the TSANZ and the American Thoracic Society. She is currently an executive member of the Blacktown and Hills Doctors’ Associations and the Australian Indian Medical Graduates Association. She has peer reviewed journals including Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, British Medical Journal, European Respiratory Journal, and Medical Journal of Australia.

Biography

A/Prof Vanessa Murphy from the University of Newcastle is a research scientist investigating the characteristics, mechanisms and consequences of asthma exacerbations during pregnancy and their health impact on both the mother and baby. She is deputy chair of the Hunter Medical Research Institute's Asthma and Breathing Program and an MRFF Investigator grant research fellow. Vanessa is an investigator with the Centre of Excellence in Treatable Traits, and led the development of the world-first online resource for both health professionals and families, the Asthma in Pregnancy Toolkit.

Biography

Paul Robinson is a Senior Staff Specialist and clinician researcher in the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. He is a Conjoint Professor at the University of Queensland where he is the Deputy Director of the Children's Health and Environment Program. His research targets improved detection, and monitoring, of early lung disease using novel lung function and imaging tools across a number of important paediatric respiratory conditions. He leads international Multiple breath washout (MBW) standardisation work which has enabled its successful incorporation into international clinical trials. Ongoing research is funded by both national and international grants through strong collaborative networks established with leading researchers.

Biography

Dr Evan Williams is an early career nutritional biochemistry and immunology researcher within the Nutrition team (led by Prof. Wood) of the Priority Research Centre for Healthy Lungs at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute. Since 2015, Dr Williams has performed laboratory based translational research alongside a clinically focused team working in the areas of nutrition, respiratory diseases, obesity and inflammation. Dr Williams current research is focused on investigating how obesity worsens outcomes in asthma with a particular interest in nutrition, inflammation and the role of sex hormones. His current postdoctoral role includes design, data collection, analysis and publication of basic and translation research projects.
