Prof Matthew Peters
Senior Staff Specialist
Concord Hospital
Engineering addiction; the impact of e-liquid components and device characteristics on nicotine exposure
3:30 PM - 3:50 PMBiography
Matthew Peters is a son, husband of one, father of five and grandfather of two. He obtained his FRACP in 1988, completed a higher degree and then spent an impoverishing three years in London as a Research Fellow. He is Senior Staff Specialist and Head of Respiratory Medicine at Concord Hospital and Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Macquarie University. He has served TSANZ in a number of roles including as President and also worked for an extended period with Lung Foundation Australia. He has made a particular contribution in the area of Tobacco Control. He became a member of the Order of Australia in 2019 recognising the significant contributions in these areas. Outside Medicine and the love of his family, 2023 will be his 23rd year of coaching an Under 13 Rugby team at St Joseph’s College in Sydney. No Wallaby yet but one Australian Rugby 7s representative!
Dr Celine Kelso
Analytical Chemist
University of Wollongong
E-cigarette toxicity - constituents and cellular harms
3:50 PM - 4:10 PMBiography
Dr Kelso is an analytical Chemist as the University of Wollongong. Her research utilise mass spectrometry and allied techniques (GC, HPLC and UPLC) to answer a range of different research questions with a clear focus on the development of new methods for the detection and quantification of chemicals present in new vaping products (nicotine and other bioactive vapes) available to users on the Australian market.
Dr Randy Suryadinata
Cilial Scientist
Royal Children's Hospital
Beyond the clouds: Exploring the impact of vaping on airway protective components
4:10 PM - 4:30 PMBiography
Dr Randy Suryadinata is the lead cilia scientist at the Victorian Diagnostic Service for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) within the Royal Children's Hospital - Melbourne. The service housed expertise and state-of-the-art cell biology and microscopy facilities for comprehensive structural and functional studies of the airway cilia to provide accurate diagnosis of PCD. In addition to his clinical role, Dr Suryadinata also possess a long-standing research interest in exploring new techniques and processes that can further improve PCD diagnosis, as well as basic research to better understand the airway cell biology and defense mechanisms, and factors affecting airway barriers.
Prof Brian Oliver
Research Leader
Woolcock Institute of Medical Research
Indirect effects: Second/third hand vaping and epigenetics
4:30 PM - 4:50 PMBiography
Professor Brian Oliver investigates the causes and consequences of respiratory diseases. His research spans basic to clinical, and focuses on asthma, COPD, IPF, LAM and dust-related diseases such a silicosis.
His research team is located at UTS and at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research where he is a Research Leader.
His major research programs include environmental health, respiratory virology, tobacco-related diseases and respiratory pharmacology.

Panel discussion
4:50 PM - 5:00 PMBiography
Dr Alen Faiz
Senior Lecturer
University of Technology Sydney
Chairperson
3:30 PM - 5:00 PMBiography
Dr Alen Faiz is a molecular pharmacologist and cellular biologist with expertise in bioinformatics and genetic editing. His research aims to understand the biology of respiratory systems at the genetic and epigenetic levels, including under conditions of exposure to cigarette smoke and current medications (i.e. corticosteroids). Dr Faiz’s multidisciplinary skills in high-level integrative bioinformatics and advanced cell culture ensure his research program can identify associations and then elucidate causal pathways and mechanisms, ultimately impacting to help the development of improved therapies.
Dr Moya Vandeleur
Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Specialist
Royal Children's Hospital
Chairperson
3:30 PM - 5:00 PMBiography
Dr Moya Vandeleur is a Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Specialist at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne and the department research lead. Her clinical work involves children with general respiratory and sleep problems. Moya is the deputy convenor for the TSANZ Tobacco & Related Substances SIG and has a special interest in adolescent health and the health effects of vaping.
