A neuro-respiratory model of chronic cough

Biography

Professor Mazzone is Deputy Head of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology and the Capability Lead in Neuroscience for the School of Biomedical Sciences, at the University of Melbourne. He heads the Laboratory of Respiratory Sensory Neuroscience and is a leading authority on the neurobiology of cough and the brain networks governing pulmonary sensory processing. Professor Mazzone’s team is recognised for seminal work in animals describing novel vagal sensory neural circuits arising from the airways and lungs and for translational studies in humans that have provided unprecedented insight into how the human brain processes cough sensory inputs in health and disease.

Clinical assessment of chronic cough and pharmacological treatment

Biography

Dr Turner is a general respiratory physician based in Brisbane who works full time for Queensland Health at Ipswich Hospital and the Metro South Clinical TB Service. He moved from London in late 2022 after working since 2016 as a consultant in the NHS, at King’s College and Charing Cross Hospitals. He finished his clinical PhD in 2016 investigating Cough and its relationship to TB transmission. Dr Turner has a keen clinical and academic interest in chronic cough and TB. He previously established specialist cough clinics at Homerton and Charing Cross Hospitals, and has successfully set up and run collaborative clinical research in London. Recent research output has been in collaboration with the King’s College London Cough Group, developing patient-reported outcome tools for assessing chronic cough, demonstrating dysfunctional suppressive control as a likely key mechanism in refractory chronic cough, and exploring the neuropathic basis for chronic cough in the neurological disease CANVAS. Richard is an associate editor for ERJ Open Research.

Biography

A/Prof Anne Vertigan is the manager of speech pathology for John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle Australia, and Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle Australia. Anne’s clinical and research interests include voice disorders, chronic cough/VCD, laryngectomy and dysphagia.

Biography

Professor Shyamali Dharmage is a world-recognised leader in Life Course Epidemiology of Chronic Respiratory Diseases. She developed and leads the Allergy & Lung Health Unit, Centre for Epidemiology & Biostatistics, University of Melbourne and has been awarded the esteemed title of Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and four prestigious Fellow titles (Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, European Respiratory Society, College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka, Dame Kate Campbell). Professor is in the top 0.018% among 219,873 all obstructive lung disease researchers worldwide (Expertscape). She has more than 500 publications and has been awarded >$75 million in grants. Prof Dharmage leads an internationally recognised research program and is the custodian and PI of two of the world’s key studies in allergies and lung health;including NHMRC funded Melbourne Atopy Cohort Study and Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study. Her work in lung function trajectories has contributed substantially to the creation of the novel paradigm of pre-COPD. Her recognition of research excellence is evidenced by national and international advisory board invitations such as the Lancet Commissioner in COPD. This COPD Lancet commission provided a roadmap for elimination of COPD including proposing a novel COPD classification. She was also a member of the expert committee that developed the Australian COPD Blueprint and led its prevention chapter.

Dr Daniel Tan is a Respiratory and Sleep Advanced Trainee at Monash Health in Victoria, and a post-doctoral research fellow with the Allergy and Lung Health Unit, Centre for Epidemiology & Biostatistics, University of Melbourne.
