Dr Pamela Laird
Senior Clinician Research Fellow
Perth Children's Hospital
Chairperson
Biography
Dr Laird is a senior paediatric respiratory physiotherapist at Perth Children’s Hospital (B.Sc Physiotherapy, dist, 1992) with >25 years expertise and special interest in chronic lung disease, particularly bronchiectasis in Indigenous children. Dr Laird concluded full-time doctoral studies in Paediatric Indigenous chronic lung disease and currently leads/co-leads four research projects across WA and QLD at the Kids Research Institute Australia. Her research has provided world-first data on the prevalence of the life-shortening, ‘orphan disease’ of bronchiectasis; addressed significant health-service and health-outcome gaps for Indigenous children in regional/remote parts of Australia. In close partnership with Aboriginal medical services, community members and experts, she has contributed to two TSANZ national position statements, and created accessible lung health literacy resources for Indigenous families that, with her research, have already translated throughout Australia. Dr Laird co-produced two online training modules for clinicians on culturally informed assessment and management of respiratory disease in Indigenous children (bronchiectasis and asthma), which are endorsed by Royal Australian College of GPs and Lung Foundation Australia. Dr Laird is the 2024 joint WA Early Career Scientist of the Year and the 2024 WA Allied Health Researcher of the Year. Dr Laird is an adjunct A/Prof at Curtin University and the University of Western Australia and supervises four PhD candidates, 10 staff, five of whom are Indigenous. Dr Laird is current co-chair of the European Respiratory Society taskforce on guidelines for airway clearance for children with chronic suppurative lung diseases.
