Phan Nguyen is head of unit of the Department of Thoracic Medicine, Royal Adelaide Hospital. His research and clinical interests include early diagnosis and accurate staging of lung cancer and well as lung cancer genomics. He serves as senior editor for Respirology and associate editor for Respirology Case Reports. He is on the continued education committee of the World Association of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology and head of the Bronchoscopy and Interventional Techniques Assembly of the APSR. He has been recognised with fellowship of the TSANZ for his contribution to respiratory medicine in Australia.

Paul Lilburn is an interventional pulmonologist based at The Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney since 2022. His special interests include advanced lung diseases, lung cancer, respiratory infections and all fields of interventional bronchoscopy e.g. bronchoscopic lung volume reduction, tissue sampling of peripheral pulmonary lesions using advanced imaging techniques as well as rigid bronchoscopy, central airway tumour debulking and airway stenting. Dr Lilburn is the current IP and Pleural Medicine SIG deputy-convenor and will be involved in helping to organise the World Congress for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (WCBIP) in Melbourne in 2026.

Clinical trials and future directions in BLVR in COPD

Professor Alvin Ing is a Professor, Respiratory Medicine, and the Clinical Program Head of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Program at Macquarie University. He has been involved in Interventional Pulmonology since 1993 when he established endobronchial laser resection and stent deployment via rigid bronchoscopy at Concord Hospital. Professor Ing pioneered the use of endobronchial valves in patients with COPD in Australia. He has been involved in several world first clinical trials, including bronchial rheoplasty to treat chronic bronchitis, polymer sealant and thermal liquid ablation to manage severe COPD, Galaxy robotic bronchoscopy and endobronchial therapy of lung cancer. He is currently the Principal Investigator for clinical trials and research with total grants of over 8 million dollars.
As the program head of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory program, he oversees the growth and development of the disciplines of Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Renal Medicine at Macquarie University.
