Biography

Emma Grainger completed a science degree and a Masters in Biochemistry from The University of Oxford in the UK, and has a Master’s in biotechnology from University College, London, and a doctorate focused on cancer viruses completed at St Mary’s Medical School, Imperial College, London. She has also held a postdoctoral post at The Institute of Cancer Research linked to the Brompton Hospital in London. Her first editorial role at Elsevier in 1999 was working as a Scientific Editor on The European Journal of Cancer. She joined The Lancet group in 2005 as a Senior Editor for The Lancet Oncology and from 2008 as Deputy Editor. Emma is the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, which launched in March 2013. She has also held Acting Executive Editor roles at The Lancet Haematology and eClinicalMedicine and is a member of The Lancet Senior Leadership Team.

Biography

Professor of Respiratory Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. Past Director, Lung Sleep Allergy & Immunology, Monash University and Medical Centre, Melbourne. Recognised for investigation of obstructive lung diseases (particularly virus-asthma-COPD exacerbations) and has conducted research of new asthma and COPD therapies. Recently research has examined vocal cord dysfunction in obstructive lung diseases. Professional activities reflect a career-long commitment to research and medical education, particularly in the areas of asthma and COPD. Recipient of ongoing Australian NH&MRC funding, chaired Australian NH&MRC Respiratory Grant Review Panel and served on the NH&MRC Academy. Currently Co-Editor of Respirology, official journal of the TSANZ and APSR.

Biography

Dr. Irina Petrache is chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and associate vice president of faculty development at National Jewish Health, Denver, Colorado, where she is professor of medicine who holds the Wollowick Endowed Chair in COPD Research. She is also professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, where she co-directs the T32 Training Program in Pulmonary Sciences. She is a member of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), where she has served in numerous roles and committees, including as chair of the ATS International Conference. In 2021, Dr. Petrache was elected as an Executive Board Member of the American Thoracic Society; she will serve as ATS President in 2024-2025. She is an alumna of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program. Dr. Petrache received several awards for her academic activities, including the Elizabeth Rich Award; The Golden Lung Award for excellence in teaching; Harrington Scholar-Innovator Award; Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Chancellor’s Prestigious External Award Recognition and the Research Frontiers Trailblazer Award. As part of her post-doctoral training, Dr. Petrache completed clinical and research fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Petrache is board certified in internal medicine, clinical care medicine, and pulmonary medicine. Dr. Petrache held faculty positions as assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University and associate professor and then tenured professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where she served as Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Petrache’s clinical interests include COPD, emphysema, sarcoidosis, acute lung injury, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension. She leads a laboratory at National Jewish Health focused on the pathogenesis of emphysema and pulmonary vascular remodeling in COPD, as well as distal lung injury and repair in response to vaping, cigarette smoking, and acute viral infections.

Biography

Vanessa McDonald is a Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Newcastle, Australia and an honorary clinical nurse consultant in the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at John Hunter Hospital. She is Director of the Centres of Excellence in Treatable Traits, and the Hunter Medical Research Institute’s Asthma and Breathing Programme. Her research interests are centred around the development of innovative approaches to the management of chronic airway diseases. She is passionate about the development and implementation of personalised medicine strategies that place the person at the centre of health care delivery. Over >25 years Vanessa has developed expertise in respiratory clinical nursing practice and education, has contributed extensively to respiratory health advocacy and health policy and, has developed as an internationally recognised respiratory researcher. She is committed to committed to improving the health and quality of life of people with lung disease in our region and internationally, and to the mission of lung health.
