Biography

Alice is a respiratory physician at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and a tuberculosis consultant with SA TB Services. In 2021 she completed a clinical fellowship in mycobacterial disease at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. She holds a Master of Public Health with Monash University.

A/Professor Anthony Byrne is a senior Staff specialist Respiratory Physician at St Vincent’s Public and Private Hospital ins Sydney as well as a Global Health Researcher and expert advisor to the World Health Organisation. He is an associate professor of medicine at the University of New South Wales and clinical lead of the TB service and (co-lead) of Long Covid services at SVH.

Biography

Professor Scott Bell MBBS, MD, FRACP is the Chair of Research, Gold Coast Health and Griffith University. He is a Senior Respiratory Physician with an interest in adult cystic fibrosis. Scott has >300 publications and has received grant support >$24 million. His research interests include acquisition and transmission pathways for human infection and his research has resulted in significant changes to clinical practice and policy implementation. He has been principal investigator on pivotal CFTR modulator trials. He was the Editor of the Journal of Cystic Fibrosis (2013-2020) and co-led the Lancet Commission on the future of CF care (published 2020).

Bacteriophage therapy in the treatment of bacterial lung infections

Biography

Prof S. Vreugde is Research Director for the Department of Otolaryngology at The University of Adelaide since July 2011. Prof Vreugde graduated with Highest Distinction as a Medical Doctor from the Brussels University (VUB) in Belgium. She subsequently specialized in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck surgery at the same university. She then obtained her PhD in molecular biology (Tel Aviv University, Israel, Laboratory of Prof. K. Avraham) in 2002 and did a post-doc at the DIBIT research center in Milan. From 2008 to 2011, she was employed in the European Patent Office (The Hague, The Netherlands), where she was analysing patent applications in the Department of Biotechnology. Her research focuses mainly on the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis, aimed at the identification and development of novel therapies to the benefit of patients. She has published >200 manuscripts, many of those in high impact journals in her field of research.

Biography

Dr Simone Barry is a respiratory physician working at Royal Adelaide Hospital. She is the Head SA Tuberculosis Service. Commensurate with that position she serves as the state representative for National TB Advisory Committee to provide expert advice to the Australian Government on the prevention and control of TB. She holds a Master of Public Health Epidemiology from Harvard Chan School of Public Health and a Masters of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Her PhD doctoral thesis examined microRNA as a biomarker for TB.
