Details
This year in review session will provide an important summary of the latest papers and best scientific contributions in the field of sleep science and technology. It is an opportunity to communicate and summarise the latest evidence relevant for clinical practice and from basic and translational research. In this session expert sleep scientists and physiologists will highlight the latest advances in the preceding year across four main topics of basic science and the functions of sleep; advances in quantitative sleep analysis; applied sleep/physiology measurement and its utility in women’s health; and emerging respiratory technologies as they relate to advances in diagnostics and treatments.
Speaker
Prof Miranda Lim
Professor
Oregon Health & Science University
Basic science and the functions of sleep
11:00 AM - 11:20 AMBiography
Dr. Miranda Lim is Professor in the Department of Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University and holds a joint appointment at the Veterans Affairs Portland Health Care System. She has served as MPI and director of the Oregon Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (NIH P30 Center) and Associate Director of VA's Advanced Fellowship in Mental Illness Research and Treatment (MIRT) for VA's VISN20 Northwest Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC). Dr. Lim is a physician-scientist board-certified in Neurology and Sleep Medicine, and leads a combined basic, translational, and clinical research program, Sleep & Health Applied Research Program (SHARP).
Professor Andrew Vakulin
Professor Of Sleep Health
Flinders University
Latest advances in sleep EEG analysis in relation to health outcomes
11:20 AM - 11:40 AMBiography
Prof Vakulin leads the Biomarkers and Risk Prevention research theme FHMRI Sleep Health. His research interest and expertise are to investigate the impact of sleep loss and sleep disorders on daytime sleepiness, sleep neurobiology and neurobehavioral function, particularly in relation to operational performance and the risk of motor vehicle/workplace accident and risk of falls older people. He has also led the development of innovative online sleep health decision support tools and digital sleep health solutions, utilising new sleep monitoring technologies for simplified screening, diagnosis and management of sleep disorders in the community and primary care.
Dr Aurore Perrault
Postdoctoral Researcher
Woolcock Institute Of Medical Research
Sex differences and women’s health: a sleep physiology perspective
11:40 AM - 12:00 PMBiography
Dr Aurore Perrault is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and a Conjoint Lecturer at Macquarie University. Specialising in sleep medicine, her research focuses on non-pharmacological interventions to modulate brain oscillations and improve sleep quality, cognitive functioning and mental health, with a particular emphasis on the role of women’s health in sleep across the lifespan and the development of women-specific care in sleep disorders.
