Speaker
Dr Rachael Harris
Research Fellow
Monash University
Shift work disorder is associated with safety outcomes
11:05 AM - 11:17 AMBiography
Dr Rachael Harris is a research fellow at Monash University in the Circadian Misalignment and Shift Work Laboratory. Her doctoral work explored shift workers as they started their career, focusing on shift work tolerance and shift work disorder. Now Dr Harris works coordinates a research trial assessing a personalised intervention for shift workers.
Dr Jennifer Cori
Research Fellow
Institute for Breathing and Sleep / Austin Health
Driver alarm effects on sleepiness, distraction, and surrogate crash measures.
11:17 AM - 11:29 AMBiography
Dr Cori is a postdoctoral research fellow from the Institute for Breathing and Sleep and Austin Health. Her research focuses on sleep apnoea diagnosis and management, as well assessment of driver safety, with a particular focus on sleepiness while driving.
Dr Linda Grosser
Postdoctoral Research
Adelaide University
A pilot study examining menopause, shiftwork and sleep quality
11:29 AM - 11:41 AMBiography
I am a Research Associate at the Behaviour Brain Body (BBB) Research Centre at Adelaide University, with expertise in sleep and circadian disruption, particularly among shift workers. My research examines the health, safety, and performance consequences of disrupted biological rhythms in real-world settings. I currently lead research on the menopause transition in women engaged in shift work, investigating how hormonal and physiological changes interact with occupational demands to affect sleep, fatigue, wellbeing, and performance. I contribute to multidisciplinary research spanning psychology, neuroscience, and health sciences, with a focus on translating evidence into practical workplace solutions.
Dr Crystal Yates
Research Fellow
Adelaide University
Heat Exposure During Sustained Wakefulness Impairs Cognition and Team Workload
11:41 AM - 11:53 AMBiography
Crystal Yates is a researcher at the Adelaide University whose work focuses on fatigue, sleep, and cognitive performance in operational settings. Her research examines how sleep loss and environmental stressors impact decision making, team dynamics, and overall performance during sustained operations. She has a particular interest in identifying and evaluating countermeasures to mitigate fatigue related performance decline and support effective recovery. Crystal’s work integrates controlled laboratory studies with applied outcomes to inform fatigue risk management, operational planning, and team based performance optimisation. Her research contributes to strengthening resilience and recovery in defence contexts, supporting sustained capability under demanding and resource constrained conditions.
Mr Thomas Doan
Honours Student
University of Sydney
Electric Fan Use Increases Total Sleep Time At 35°C
11:53 AM - 12:05 PMBiography
Thomas is an Exercise Physiology (Honours) student at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Heat and Health Research Centre. His research explores how overnight electric fan use may provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly strategy to optimise sleep quality in hot overnight environments. Beyond this, Thomas is interested in the broader intersection between climate change and human thermal physiology across the lifespan.
Dr Eleni Kavaliotis
Research Fellow
Monash University
Twelve-Month Longitudinal Study of Women’s Sleep, Anxiety, and Vasomotor Symptoms
12:17 PM - 12:29 PMBiography
Eleni Kavaliotis is a Research Fellow in the Sleep, Cognition, and Mood Laboratory at Monash University and a registered Psychologist. Her research focuses on the mechanistic role of sleep loss and sleep disorders in shaping cognition, mood, and overall health and well-being. Eleni’s aim is to bridge the gap between scientific research and community impact, helping individuals achieve better sleep and, in turn, better mental health. She is currently leading a project aiming to design and implement a digital sleep program to improve access to preventive sleep health interventions for community-dwelling people living with cognitive impairment and their care partners.
Dr Bastien Lechat
Senior Research Fellow
Flinders University
Global impact of temperature on nocturnal cardiorespiratory stress
12:05 PM - 12:17 PMBiography
Bastien is an NHMRC EL fellow and senior research fellow at FHRMI:Sleep health. He is interested in sleep health, sleep disorders and climate change.
