Oral appliance therapy (OAT) has evolved from a secondary alternative to CPAP into a scientifically robust and increasingly personalised treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). This 90-minute symposium brings together international and Australasian leaders in respiratory medicine, physiology and dental sleep medicine to examine the latest evidence on comparative effectiveness, cardiovascular implications, physiological endotyping and technological innovation in OAT. Through data-driven presentations and interdisciplinary discussion, this session will clarify where OAT fits within contemporary OSA management and how collaborative models can enhance patient-centred care. The goal is to move beyond simple AHI comparisons and focus on real-world effectiveness, adherence, mechanisms of response and integration into modern sleep services.

Biography

Professor Peter Cistulli is a clinician researcher with 35 years’ experience in the fields of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. He is Professor of Sleep Medicine at the University of Sydney and holds the ResMed Chair. He leads the Sleep Research Theme within the multidisciplinary Charles Perkins Centre and is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow (L3). He is also Clinical Director of the Sleep Medicine Program at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. He is currently President-elect of the World Sleep Society.
