1:30 PM - 1:42 PMBiography
Steven Luu is a research registrar at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research with special interests in sleep-disordered breathing.
Dr Nicolo Malagutti
Senior Lecturer
Australian National University
CPAP adherence in practice: Do endotypes hold predictive value?
1:42 PM - 1:54 PMBiography
Dr Nicolo Malagutti is a biomedical engineer and Senior Lecturer at Australian National University. Nicolo has over 15 years experience in sleep, from humble sleep tech beginnings to now researcher in the field. Nicolo heads the "Big Sleep" research data initiative, a research database development partnership between Canberra Sleep Clinic and ANU.
Dr Fahimeh (Phoebe) Faqihi
Postdoctoral Researcher
Westmead Hospital
OSA in Pacific Islanders: Distinct endotypes and increased hypoxic burden
1:54 PM - 2:06 PMBiography
Dr Fahimeh (Phoebe) Faqihi is a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Westmead Hospital. She holds a PhD in Clinical Medicine from Macquarie University and has a growing research interest in sleep and respiratory disorders. As an early-career academic, she is passionate about generating scientific and clinical evidence to support more informed and patient-centred approaches to care.
Ms Julia Demura
PhD Student
Flinders University
Pressure measurement site effects on the respiratory arousal threshold.
2:06 PM - 2:18 PMBiography
Julia Demura is a final year PhD candidate investigating respiratory effort and arousal mechanisms in obstructive sleep apnoea at Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute, Flinders University.
Miss Mim Potter
Honours Student
Flinders University
Neural drive to the human strap muscles
2:18 PM - 2:30 PMBiography
Mim Potter is a Medical Science graduate pursuing her Honours at Flinders University within the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute Sleep Health. Her research, supervised by Dr Anna Hudson, Professor Danny Eckert and Professor Peter Catcheside, focuses on characterising respiratory-related activity in human strap muscles. Mim hopes to advance her research career in sleep and respiratory health, and plans to undertake her PhD in the near future. Her work contributes to understanding fundamental respiratory physiology with potential applications in addressing sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. Mim is a recipient of the 2025 Playford Trust Honours Scholarship.
Assoc Prof David Wang
Senior Scientific Officer
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
Opioid-related central sleep apnea doesn’t harm respiratory and sleep parameters
2:30 PM - 2:42 PMBiography
Assoc. Prof David Wang is a Senior Scientific Officer in the Dept of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital; and Central Clinical School, The University of Sydney and the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. He obtained his PhD in Clinical Sleep Medicine from the University of Melbourne 20 year ago. He has been awarded the NHMRC Health Professional Research Fellowship and NHMRC Project Grant as Chief Investigator A.
Dr Phuc Nguyen
Research Fellow
Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute / Sleep Health / Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health
A non-invasive method to quantify work of breathing during sleep
2:42 PM - 2:54 PMBiography
Dr Nguyen is an early career researcher, currently working as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health (FHMRI Sleep Health). Dr Nguyen's current research focus is to apply mathematical and data-driven approaches to enhance the understanding of the respiratory system, specifically in quantifying breathing effort
