The past year has seen significant advancements in sleep medicine, spanning new treatment options, innovative diagnostic tools, and updated clinical guidelines. As sleep disorders continue to impact millions worldwide, researchers and clinicians have made strides in addressing conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, narcolepsy and circadian rhythm disorders. This clinical year in review will highlight the most impactful developments and clinical papers in sleep medicine over the past year, offering insights into emerging trends and their implications for patient care. This will complement the Year in Review, Basic sleep sciences and technology.

Biography

Clinical Professor Garun Hamilton is a Respiratory and Sleep Disorders physician at Monash Health and with the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash University. He is the Director of Sleep Medicine at Monash Health. He leads the Respiratory Failure and Non-Invasive Ventilation service at Monash Health, and holds an appointment with the Victorian Respiratory Support Service (VRSS), running the Monash Health satellite service for the VRSS. His research interests are broad. He contributes significantly to the profession and has had substantial impact in areas such as: 1) Clinical guideline development and implementation, 2) National health policy impact and government interaction. He provides ongoing leadership for the profession and is the current President of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA).

Biography

Dr. Sivam is a Respiratory and Sleep Specialist. After completing her medical training in Nova Scotia, Canada, she undertook further specialist training in Boston, Massachusetts and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia, USA. In Sydney, she completed her Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Fellowship requirements at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Woolcock Institute of Medical Research (WIMR). Dr. Sivam runs the Narcolepsy and Hypersomnolence Clinic at WIMR and is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA)Medicines Subcommittee, which is currently working on advocating for improved access to first line medications and research opportunities for narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. She is co-chair of the Sydney Health Partners Sleep Health Clinical Academic Group.

Biography

Professor Christopher Gordon is a sleep researcher at Macquarie University and Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. His research focuses on phenotyping, pathophysiology and treatment of insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders. He has special interest in the digital therapeutics and how they can be used to improve sleep health outcomes.

Biography

Amy Reynolds is an Associate Professor in Clinical Sleep Health at Flinders University. Her research focuses on shift work, sleep disorders, and worker health, safety and productivity - with a particular focus on the emerging workforce. Amy is also an intern psychologist at AISH Sleep Health Clinics, where she supports patients dealing with sleep-related challenges. Her research aims to improve wellbeing for shift workers across healthcare, emergency services, and other demanding sectors - with the goal of improving early detection and management of sleep disorders in young shift workers.
