SDU2025 marks the 15 year anniversary of the inaugural Dr Sam Robinson memorial lecture, dedicated to Australia's pioneering surgeon for sleep disordered breathing, this year hosted in his home city of Adelaide. This session will reflect on the history of sleep surgery in Australia and the legacy left by Dr Robinson. We will then delve into current state of surgery vs CPAP, weight loss medications and novel stimulation targets for the treatment of OSA.

Biography

Professor MacKay is an Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Wollongong, providing expert care in Ear, Nose, Throat, Head & Neck, and Sleep Surgery through the Illawarra ENT Head and Neck Clinic, The Wollongong Hospital, and the Woolcock Institute of Sleep. A fellowship-trained contemporary airway surgeon, he is widely regarded as a leading figure in the field across Australasia. Professor MacKay has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications on sleep apnoea surgery, including textbook chapters and dissection manuals. He is a sought-after speaker, having presented at numerous national and international conferences, including in India, China, and the United States. He is a member of the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (ASOHNS), the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA), and is the outgoing Vice President of the International Surgical Sleep Society.

So does neurostimulation therapy for OSA really work?: The realities of who, when and why for Australian sleep specialists

Biography

Robson Capasso is the Chief of Sleep Surgery, Professor of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and Associate Dean at Stanford University School of Medicine and Advisor to the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign. His medical training includes Head and Neck Surgery, Neurosciences and Sleep Medicine. He has done research and published extensively on the pre-treatment evaluation and surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and currently his research interests have a focus on the analysis of clinically relevant outcomes and value-based strategies for sleep health. The local and international recognition of this work is often associated with one of his favorite tasks: lecturing and trading knowledge nationally and internationally. He has mentored or supervised hundreds of medical students, residents, fellows or visiting scholars from over 30 countries, and dozens of Stanford Biodesign students who developed healthcare projects or companies in the Bay Area, Japan, Brazil and Singapore. He aims to utilize this acquired experience to foster health innovation training of multidisciplinary teams and engineers with broad impact globally. He is a member of the Stanford Medical Leadership Academy, an initiative aiming to foster the development of innovative leadership across and outside departments at the School of Medicine and in the role of Associate Dean of Virtual Medicine he assists the Dean’s office and our CTSA group for the strategic development of translational research and education. Most importantly, Robson is Cintia’s husband, Julia, Lucas and Olivia’s father, world traveler, Palmeiras’ fan and tennis enthusiast.
