Dr Machan is an accredited exercise physiologist and nutritionist from the University of Sydney and is an Honorary affiliate of the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. Her research focuses on lifestyle and behavioural interventions in sleep disorders.

Biography

Dr David Klyne is a NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow and Fulbright Scholar at The University of Queensland. There he leads an international team that probe the bio-psycho-social mechanisms that underlie physiological and pathological pain. His work has received international acclaim, including winning the ISSLS Prize—premier international prize in spinal research—twice. He is also a Queensland Young Tall Poppy recipient (2024) and has received more than $150K in research prize money and >$23M in research funding.

Biography

Miss Michelle Wang is an Exercise Science honours student from The University of Sydney. Michelle’s research interest lies in the complex relationship between chronic musculoskeletal pain and sleep disturbances, with particular focus on improving clinical practice through evidence-based interventions. Her honours project is a nested mixed methods study exploring physiotherapists’ perceptions and attitudes towards cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia training. Outside her studies, Michelle works as a Research Assistant and Clinical placement educator. During her undergraduate studies, Michelle worked as an academic tutor for exercise science and biomechanics units as a recipient of the university’s student education grant.

Rachel is an exercise physiology graduate and current PhD candidate at the University of Sydney. Her research focuses on exercise interventions for managing hip osteoarthritis, with a particular interest in the interaction between pain, sleep, and physical activity. Rachel’s research aims to translate evidence-based exercise strategies into practical solutions for patients with complex needs. She has clinical experience in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and chronic disease management. She is passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration, and she is committed to advancing knowledge that supports healthier aging and improved quality of life through movement.

Ye Tian's research focuses on the implementation and health economics of physiotherapy care and lifestyle behaviour factors for musculoskeletal conditions.

Biography

Dr. Aaron Schokman is a lived experience Research Fellow at The University of Sydney. He is currently affiliated with the Central Clinical School, Charles Perkins Centre and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course. Aaron was diagnosed with narcolepsy type 1, a rare and debilitating sleep disorder, in his late teens that sparked his interest in research, co-design, and all things sleep.
