Amber Russell graduated with Honours in Psychology in 2024 from the University of Melbourne, where she completed a thesis in the John Trinder Sleep Lab examining sleep-disordered breathing in post-traumatic stress disorder, with a focus on mechanisms that may underlie vulnerability to obstructive sleep apnoea. She is now an intern at the Monash Healthy Sleep Clinic, where she is involved in research focusing on insomnia and mental health. She is particularly interested in clinically relevant research and hopes to continue building experience in applied settings.

Darah is a fourth year Clinical Ph.D. Candidate studying at Flinders University in South Australia and is also a General Psychologist. Her research and clinical interests include insomnia, chronic pain, and trauma across the lifespan. More specifically, Darah is interested in the phenomenon of sleep-wake state discrepancy. Her Ph.D. thesis is focusing on the prevalence and presentation of this phenomenon in individuals with and without sleep disorders.

App-delivered sleep therapy for individuals with back pain and insomnia

James is a lecturer of anatomy in the School of Medical Sciences at the University of Sydney. He completed his PhD thesis in September of 2024 concerning the bidirectionality of chronic low back pain and sleep disturbance. It was titled: Rest Assured, Tackling the Twists and Turns of Chronic Low Back Pain and Sleep Disturbance. He will be presenting the findings from the third study of his PhD thesis. A fully online randomized controlled trial investigating the efficacy of a digital behavioural therapy for sleep for improving pain interference in people with chronic low back pain and insomnia.

Dr Sumedha Verma is a clinical psychologist, and research fellow at Monash University with expertise in sleep health and insomnia. She has developed and led trials to reduce poor sleep among parents, caregivers and older adults. She translates research into practice through her specialised perinatal sleep service, Sleepnatal, offering evidence-based perinatal care and training for healthcare professionals. She practices from an intersectional, culturally responsive, and strengths-based lens.

Phil Teuwen is an experienced Clinical Physiologist and healthcare leader with over 15 years in sleep medicine, workforce development, and service innovation. He has managed multidisciplinary departments at a major private hospitals and is the founder of Bedpost Sleep Collective, performing allied health led, complex sleep assessments and integrated care. Phil is an ACP and CSS, and has contributed to national and international healthcare programs as a mentor and facilitator. His work bridges clinical practice with research, exploring novel interventions in sleep health, and he is passionate about improving outcomes for patients with complex medical and psychological sleep presentations.

Darkness metaphors for depression: A case of non-visual photoreception?

Ms. Burge is an early career researcher at Flinders University and is interested in how non-visual photoreception shapes human thought and behaviour. Her use of innovative research techniques allows her to investigate the overlap between philosophy and circadian science, such as answers to the question "Why do we describe depression as a darkness?" Her expertise includes natural language processing, machine learning, and computational models of cognition.
