Details

This course will teach and train participants to comprehensively assess the upper airway, nose, pharynx and larynx from a functional breathing perspective. Under the guidance of specialists, small groups will learn and practice upper airway examination skills, as well as upper airway endoscopy techniques. Participants should be comfortable applying upper airway examination skills in their own practice to assess patients with problematic sleep and breathing disorders. Content covered will include: - Anatomy of the upper airway - Endoscopic assessment of nasal obstruction - Inflammatory causes of nasal dysfunction - The art of transoral examination - Static endoscopic assessment of the upper airway and anatomical phenotypes - Dynamic awake endoscopic assessment of the upper airway - Drug Induced Sleep Endoscopy - Role of the larynx in breathing disorders Morning tea and lunch is included.

Biography

Dr Nicholas Phillips is a paediatric and adult ENT surgeon who currently practices on the Gold Coast, Australia. After attaining Fellowship in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons he went on to complete subspecialty training in Snoring and Sleep Apnoea for children and adults with world renowned Professor Stuart MacKay in Wollongong. He has completed additional training in Rhinology and Thyroid/Parathyroid surgery. Nick completed his Masters of Surgery at the University of Sydney and was awarded a high distinction for his dissertation in thyroid cancer. He has authored multiple international publications, been an invited speaker on sleep apnoea and an investigator in several device trials for obstructive sleep apnoea.

Professor MacKay is an Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Wollongong, providing expert care in Ear, Nose, Throat, Head & Neck, and Sleep Surgery through the Illawarra ENT Head and Neck Clinic, The Wollongong Hospital, and the Woolcock Institute of Sleep. A fellowship-trained contemporary airway surgeon, he is widely regarded as a leading figure in the field across Australasia. Professor MacKay has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications on sleep apnoea surgery, including textbook chapters and dissection manuals. He is a sought-after speaker, having presented at numerous national and international conferences, including in India, China, and the United States. He is a member of the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (ASOHNS), the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA), and is the outgoing Vice President of the International Surgical Sleep Society.

Dr. Julianna (Jules) Rodin is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and is board certified in both Otolaryngology and Sleep Medicine. She completed Otolaryngology residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, a hybrid fellowship in Sleep Medicine and Sleep Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and then an additional fellowship in Sleep Surgery at Stanford University. She is also co-director of the CPAP Alternatives Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania and the APD of the Otolaryngology residency program at the University of Pennsylvania. She specializes in and provides both medical and surgical options for treating sleep apnea.
