Biography

Barbara is a Research Professor in the Dept of Women’s & Children’s Health (University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand). She is a physiologist by training, developing a specialized interest in paediatric sleep through her early research into the biological mechanisms underlying Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. She has published widely in the area of sleep measurement and sleep problems in children and related health outcomes spanning age ranges from infancy through to adolescence. Her main research focus currently is on adolescent sleep health and the benefits of later school start times beyond 9:45 am.

Biography

Dr Emma Cooke is a sociologist and postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Queensland working in the Child Development, Education and Care Research Group at the Queensland Brain Institute and the Kids Sleep Research Group at the Child Health Research Centre. Dr Cooke works with interdisciplinary teams to research the lived experiences of children, families, educators, and clinicians – focusing on sleep, gender, disability, healthcare, and inequality. As the qualitative research lead in the Kids Sleep Research Group, Dr Cooke facilitates research training and support, and collaborates with clinicians, students, and researchers to conduct qualitative research.

Biography

Lucas Agnoletto a keen early career researcher, completed his honours degree at the University of Melbourne, in affiliation with the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and the Royal Children's Hospital. In 2022, he undertook his first research project, exploring sleep quality among children diagnosed with hepatic glycogen storage disease. This information has assisted the management of hepatic GSDs by the metabolic medicine team at RCH. Currently Lucas is working as a research assistant in the respiratory and sleep medicine team at RCH, assisting in multiple research projects investigating sleep in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Initially working in paediatric sleep medicine in Sydney before moving to Brisbane and working with children with acquired brain injury in rehabilitation. Rebecca has supported research throughout her career and is currently completing a PhD on sleep for children with acquired brain injury.

Biography

Dr Natalie Pride (MPSY, PhD) is a clinical neuropsychologist at the Neurogenetics Clinical Service at The Children's Hospital at Westmead and completed her PhD through the University of Sydney. She also currently leads the Neuropsychology Research Team at Kids Neuroscience Centre. She has over 15 years of clinical and research experience in Neurofibromatosis Type 1 and was recently awarded the 2024 Francis S Collins Scholar Program in Neurofibromatosis Clinical and Translational Research to investigate sleep in NF1.

Professor Rosemary Horne holds a NHMRC Investigator Fellowship and is a Senior Principal Research Fellow in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University. Her research interests focus on numerous aspects of physiology during sleep in infants and children. Rosemary has published more than 200 scientific research and review articles. She is Chair of the Physiology working group of the International Society for the Study and Prevention of Perinatal and Infant Death and an executive board member and secretary of the International Pediatric Sleep Association. She is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Sleep Research, Sleep Medicine and Sleep.

She is completing the research component of her degree with Massey’s Sleep Wake Research Centre, under the primary supervision of Leigh Signal. She is interested in the myriad relationships between sleep and mental health, particularly in women and young people, and is looking forward to integrating her growing knowledge into her clinical practice.

Biography

Dr Lisa Walter is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University. Her main research focus is the affect that sleep disordered breathing has on the cardiovascular system in children. Dr Walter’s research is conducted in collaboration with the Melbourne Children’s Sleep Centre. She analyses overnight polysomnographic data from clinically referred children and from non-snoring control children recruited from the community, using analytical tools such as heart rate variability, baroreflex sensitivity, pulse transit time, arterial stiffness and examination of the surges in heart rate in response to respiratory events to study the cardiovascular outcomes in children.
