A medico-legal masterclass, this session is designed for a range of sleep professionals who want to develop or extend their expertise in the complex realm of medicolegal sleep reporting. The internationally- renowned speaker list includes a King’s Counsel/crown prosecutor and past ASA president. Attendees have the opportunity to become well-versed in this nuanced crossover between law and sleep medicine. This symposium will benefits those in a wide range of rules including sleep physicians, sleep scientists, advanced trainee and in fact anyone who has wondered what happens in the courts.
Our panel will explore the history and landmark cases of forensic sleep medicine. We will prepare you to write your first or next medico-legal report. Our barrister speaker will prepare you for cross examination and discuss how your report will be used for sentencing.

Dr Christiaan Yu is a respiratory and sleep physician based in Melbourne Australia. He is the current chair of the ASA advanced training subcommittee.

Dr Desai is a Specialist Sleep & Respiratory Physician. He has a PhD in Sleep Medicine through the University of Sydney, where he studied obstructive sleep apnoea and driver performance. He is a Senior Physician at Prince of Wales Hospital. He is the Medical Director of St Lukes Private Sleep Laboratory, & also of Sydney Sleep Centre in Sydney CBD. He is a Medical Assessor for Respiratory & Sleep Disorders at The NSW Motor Accidents Authority. He has extensive medicolegal experience, dealing with sleep related violence & fall asleep driving issues. Dr Desai also maintains an active clinical private practice.

Matthew Naughton is a sleep & respiratory physician, head of general respiratory and sleep medicine, Alfred Hospital and Adjunct clinical professor, Monash University. His interests are cardiopulmonary interaction in wakefulness and sleep and its applicability to forensic medicine.

Biography
Trevor Wallwork has been admitted for over 23 years, practising predominantly in criminal and administrative law, with an emphasis on trial advocacy. He is regularly briefed by the Commonwealth and Victorian Directors of Public Prosecutions, often in complex matters involving expert forensic and medico-legal evidence. Trevor has provided advice in significant matters including that of Cardinal Pell, and of Craig McLachlan, and appeared in numerous jury trials. In 2018, Trevor appeared (pro bono) on behalf of the traditional landowners of Wagina Island, Solomon Islands, to successfully set aside the establishment of a bauxite mine. Trevor has taught advocacy at the Bar Readers' Course, and in the Solomon Islands and PNG.
