Join a faculty of experts for an update on the very latest in dental sleep medicine in conjunction with Sleep DownUnder, the premier sleep conference in the southern hemisphere. This comprehensive survey of the latest in research findings and clinical practice in dental sleep medicine is an opportunity to learn from others practising in dental sleep medicine, and connect with experts in the field from Australia, New Zealand and beyond.
This two-day short course is for dentists or other oral health professionals of all experience levels (beginner through to advanced), who have completed an introduction to dental sleep medicine course, or clinicians experienced in dental sleep medicine who wish to expand or refresh their knowledge in more broad sleep medicine concepts and complex cases.

Dr Dayna Law, Bsc, MBBS, FRACP is a graduate of the University of Queensland. She completed her Advanced Training in Respiratory & Sleep Medicine in Southeast Queensland and undertook at Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Greenslopes Private Hospital. She is the Deputy Director of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and the Director of Physician Education at Logan Hospital. She is a lecturer for Griffith University School of Medicine and Dentistry. She has completed research projects throughout her training including publications with the Gallipoli Foundation looking at Sleep disturbances in Vietnam Veterans. She has a keen interest in healthcare innovation and novel models of care and was selected to undertake a Fellowship in Healthcare Improvement with Clinical Excellence Queensland in 2020. Following her Fellowship, she set up the Logan Sleep Service as a satellite service of the Princess Alexandra Sleep Disorders Unit. She presently serves on the Queensland Statewide Respiratory and Sleep Network, Clinical Prioritisation working group in addition to the Logan Hospital Wellbeing Commitee and is a member of the RACP Queensland Commitee. She is an advocate for healthcare access, innovation and training the next generation of doctors.

Dr Kirryn Williams graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from James Cook University in 2007. She is a qualified General Physician and Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Physician. She completed her respiratory training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital. She then completed a Sleep Medicine Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Her medical training has been undertaken in both tertiary centres and regional centres including Western Australia and Cape York Peninsula. Her goal is to deliver quality health care to regional Australians.
Dr Williams has an interest in conditions affecting sleep such as sleep apnoea, respiratory muscle weakness (eg motor neuron disease) and other sleep conditions such as hypersomnolence syndromes and dream disorders. Dr Williams other medical interests include all respiratory conditions including asthma, smoking-related lung diseases, pulmonary vascular disorders, lung cancer and diagnostic bronchoscopy. She also has an interest managing complex medical patients perioperatively, especially bariatric patients.

Dr McMahon is a Staff Specialist in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Austin Health in Melbourne, Australia, and is a clinician working with the Victorian Respiratory Support Service, which provides non-invasive ventilation to patients with chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure in Victoria. He also works in private practice at Epworth Healthcare. He is a lecturer for the University of Melbourne and a clinical supervisor for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Dr McMahon completed his medical education at the University of Melbourne prior to undertaking training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Austin Health and was awarded Fellowship in 2003. Dr McMahon completed a Graduate Diploma in Medical Education through the University of Dundee and then completed a Master’s program in Health Profession Education at Monash University, Melbourne, where he investigated the impact of learning style on educational outcomes in physician trainees.
Through his work at Austin Health, Dr McMahon has been a co-investigator on a number of trials that have explored the impact of shift work disorder on nursing staff. He has also collaborated in research studies using fMRI investigating the mechanisms of central cough sensitization. More recently he has been involved in a metanalysis of endometriosis and sleep disorders and has been involved in validation studies of somfit, a novel device for assessment of sleep disordered breathing.
Dr McMahon has expertise in the assessment and management of patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure having worked with the Victorian Respiratory Support Service as a clinician for over 20 years. The Victorian Respiratory Support Service is responsible for the provision of all chronic non-invasive ventilatory support for the State of Victoria, with over 1200 patients on NIV.
Dr McMahon has been a member of numerous committees for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for over 20 years, including the Specialist Training Committee in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and was part of the Curriculum Writing Group that developed the curricula in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. He has also served on numerous committees for the Australasian Sleep Association, including the Education Committee, Finance Committee (as chair) and Board.
Dr McMahon is a passionate teacher which led him to establish DeltaMed, a medical education company that has helped to support the educational needs of physician trainees for over 20 years. He has been an invited speaker for the ASA annual scientific meetings and has been an invited speaker for numerous pharmaceutical companies and device companies. When not working, you will usually find him busy in the kitchen cooking, playing the piano, in a cryotherapy chamber or on the gym floor.

Dr Adam Teo is a passionate sleep medicine dentist and proud founder of QLD Dental Sleep Therapy, a clinic dedicated to the management of patients for obstructive sleep apnoea, bruxism, TMJ disorders and orofacial pain. When first discovering about dental sleep medicine, and the large impact that dentists could have on people’s quality of life and health, he was immediately drawn in and eager to get involved. He is currently the co-chair of the ASA Dental Sleep Medicine council, has a full-time career focus in the field, is a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and holds a Master of Science in Medicine (Sleep Medicine) from the University of Sydney.

Clinical Associate Professor Dr Andrew Gikas is a graduate of the University of Melbourne’s, Melbourne Dental School class of 1991.
Andrew ran his own practice in Oakleigh, Melbourne for 25 years with a focus on general dental practice, quality service and patient focused care. He has a strong interest in oral health promotion, teaching, dental sleep medicine and has been involved in lecturing and clinical research in sleep.
He is the Clinic Director of the Melbourne Dental Clinic, one of the University of Melbourne's Teaching Health Clinics. He runs a Dental Sleep Medicine oral appliance clinic for public patients at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and a private clinic at the Melbourne Dental Clinic.
As well as working part time as a dentist Andrew is involved in a number of professional activities outside of clinical practice. He is a Past President of the ADA Vic State Branch, holds an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor position at the University Of Melbourne, sits on the Board of the Australian Dental Association and previously was on the Board of the Australasian Sleep Association as the Conference Chair. He is currently the Chair of the FDSM Advisory Committee.
His passions are all aspects of general dentistry, dental sleep medicine and footy (GO PIES!).

Dr Ball has restricted his practice to dental sleep medicine over 24 years ago and is one of the most experienced practitioners in the world. He established Sleepwise Clinic in 2003 which has treated over 18,000 patients with oral appliance therapy.
Dr Ball has organised and presented training programs for dentists throughout Australia and New Zealand as well as in the United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, Singapore and Malaysia. He has presented on dental sleep to GPs, sleep physicians as well as on behalf of the Australian Dental Association, the Australian Orthodontic society and Dental Health Services of Victoria. Dr Ball has also been involved as a principal clinician at the Temporomandibular Disorders Pain Clinic at the Royal Melbourne Dental Hospital.
Dr Ball is a Fellow of Dental Sleep Medicine from the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA) and is a past chairperson of the dental sleep medicine council of the ASA.

Dr Michelle Donegan is an Australian trained Fellow of Dental Sleep Medicine. She completed her undergraduate training at the University of Queensland in 1995 and was awarded first class honours. Since 2004 she has been involved with continued professional education in oral appliances.
Dr Donegan is an occasional lecturer to Sleep & Respiratory Physicians and often participates in Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings at various hospitals and clinics and provides clinical tuition to Advanced Sleep Trainees. She is experienced and familiar with all oral appliances through sleep research trials at Neuroscience Research Australia and the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research.
Dr Donegan's interests in sleep medicine are the cardiometabolic effects of sleep apnoea and the occupational aspects of shift work and transport industry regulation. In particular, she is interested in disruptive technologies to assist patient journeys, screening and assessment of sleep apnoea.
Dr Donegan is an Honorary Visiting Dental Officer at the Charles Perkins Research Centre and for 15 years is located at the Woolcock Clinic now at Macquarie University and also services 4 private locations across Sydney. She is committed to health equity and assisting GPs with improved clinical pathways and patient outcomes.

Dr. Alexander McDonald grew up in the Whitsundays and completed his formal dental training in Cairns at James Cook University (JCU) where he was awarded an academic medal for bachelor coursework. He then went on to work in the public dental system in Victoria and Tasmania before embarking on a career with the Royal Australian Navy, where he served for five years at the rank of Lieutenant including a position as Senior Dental Officer at HMAS Cairns. During this time Alex held a clinical supervisor role at JCU tutoring senior year dental students. As an Australian Dental Association (QLD Branch) Councillor, Alex is passionate about engaging with and educating the wider community in the interests of promoting oral health.
Alex has studied with the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and also completed two post graduate diplomas in the fields of orthodontics and dental sleep medicine with the Excellence in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics Academy. Alex was also certified as part of the inaugural Fellowship in Dental Sleep Medicine program with the Australasian Sleep Association. Alex is currently furthering his knowledge base and is on the path to become a certified orofacial myologist. Outside of work, Alex enjoys playing golf and squash as well as hanging out at the beach and occasionally going for a sail.
