Details

This multidisciplinary course focused on neurology for sleep clinicians will serve as a foundational course for advanced trainees and fellows as well as an update for established sleep physicians on advances in the diagnosis and management of neurological sleep conditions. This course will be led by experienced and knowledgeable practitioners across multiple fields and allow a forum for questioning and discussion regarding neurological investigations and referral.

Biography

Dr. John Phamnguyen is a neurologist and epilepsy specialist working with the Comprehensive Epilepsy Programs at The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Mater Hospital Brisbane. He has specialised training in surgical epilepsy, particularly in evaluating patients using intracranial EEG (stereo-EEG) and neuroimaging techniques (MRI/PET/SPECT/fMRI). Dr. Phamnguyen is currently completing his PhD at The University of Queensland, focusing his research on understanding the pathophysiology of tonic-clonic seizures through advanced neuroimaging techniques and video-EEG analysis.

Biography

Prof Howard is Director of the Victorian Respiratory Support Service, and Deputy Director Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Austin Health. He is a board member for the Institute for Breathing and Sleep, Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University and Clinical Professor at The University of Melbourne. With more than 200 research publications, his research has addressed improving sleep health in road safety and occupational settings and trials to optimise management of acute and domiciliary respiratory failure and ventilation.

Diagnosis and pathophysiology of central disorders of hypersomnolence

Biography

Dr. Sivam is a Respiratory and Sleep Specialist. After completing her medical training in Nova Scotia, Canada, she undertook further specialist training in Boston, Massachusetts and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia, USA. In Sydney, she completed her Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Fellowship requirements at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Woolcock Institute of Medical Research (WIMR). Dr. Sivam runs the Narcolepsy and Hypersomnolence Clinic at WIMR and is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA)Medicines Subcommittee, which is currently working on advocating for improved access to first line medications and research opportunities for narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. In addition, she is a member of the ASA Hypersomnolence Data Registry Working Group and Co-Chair of the Sydney Health Partners Sleep Health Clinical Academic Group. Dr. Sivam also works part time at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Cystic Fibrosis Service.

Biography

Professor Ron Grunstein has been a consultant physician in sleep disorders for over 30 years and a pioneer in improving patient care in sleep medicine in Australia and internationally. He currently holds an Investigator Leadership Level 3 award from the National Health and Medical Research Council. Ron is a Senior Staff Specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Professor of Sleep Medicine at Macquarie University and the University of Sydney. He heads the Sleep and Circadian Research Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research.

Dr Andrew (Andreas) Pattichis Dr Pattichis is a Neurologist and Respiratory & Sleep Physician currently working at The Royal Melbourne and Alfred Hospitals, as well as a number of regional centres. His fellowship in Neurology and Sleep Medicine, is the first training program of its kind in Australia. Dr Pattichis is also enrolled in a PhD focusing on interactions between neurological and sleep disorders.

Brendon Yee is a Senior Staff Specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA). He is a respiratory and sleep physician and a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney. He is also the Head of the Discipline of Sleep Medicine at Sydney University. He is a senior researcher/clinician at the Sleep Research Group, at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. Biography

Elie Matar is a dual-trained neurologist and sleep physician based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He is also a translational clinician-scientist supported by an NHMRC Emerging Leadership grant and Horizon Fellowship at the University of Sydney. He has a particular interest in neurological sleep disorders, and isolated REM sleep behavior disorder in which he is a recognized international authority. He leads a research program focused on the interrelationship between sleep and the manifestation and progression of neurodegenerative disorders. He has secured > $1.5M of grant funding supporting methods spanning neuroimaging, sleep neurophysiology, and clinical phenotyping and trials.
