Speaker

Dr Elizabeth Brown
Sleep physician
Neuroscience Research Australia

Ultrasound evaluation of the pterygomandibular raphe in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

3:20 PM - 3:32 PM

Biography

Dr. Brown is a leading senior clinician, with an emphasis on quality assurance and service improvement, including participation in multidisciplinary committees for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Cystic Fibrosis, Hospital Acquired Aspiration Pneumonia Working Party and recently the Outbreak Management Committee. Her research to date uses novel imaging techniques to examine the biomechanics of the upper airway and in particular the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), with a focus on mechanism of action and prediction of treatment success in mandibular advancement splint. Dr. Brown developed a project to investigate sleep disruption in Long COVID.
Dr Fiona Knapman
Postdoctoral Fellow
Neuroscience Research Australia

Maintaining long-term functional optogenetic stimulation for OSA therapy in a rodent model

3:33 PM - 3:45 PM

Biography

Fiona recently received her PhD from the University of New South Wales and is currently employed as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Neuroscience Research Australia. Prior to this she graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering. Fiona’s research focuses on establishing preclinical support for a novel muscle-stimulation therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea. This approach uses a viral vector gene delivery system to induce the expression of light-sensitive ion channels in upper airway dilator muscles ('optogenetics'). Targeted light stimulation during sleep then triggers muscle contractions and prevents airway collapse.
Dr Lauriane Jugé
Senior Research Fellow
Neuroscience Research Australia

Regional electromyographic activity in genioglossus during quiet breathing in supine, awake individuals with and without sleep apnoea.

3:46 PM - 3:58 PM

Biography

Dr. Lauriane Jugé is an emerging biomedical researcher with nine years of post-doctoral experience, excluding career interruptions. She holds a Senior Research Fellow position at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), serves as a conjoint Lecturer at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Medicine & Health Faculty (School of Biomedical Sciences), and is an associate investigator at the UNSW Ageing Futures Institute. Her research focuses on the neuropathophysiological aspects of sleep disorders, especially obstructive sleep apnoea.
Dr Marnie Graco
Implementation Scientist
Institute for Breathing and Sleep

Understanding the uptake of non-invasive ventilation in motor neurone disease: results of a national survey.

3:59 PM - 4:11 PM

Biography

Dr Marnie Graco is a post-doctoral clinician researcher and implementation scientist with a clinical background in physiotherapy. Her PhD (University of Melbourne 2019) investigated the clinical management of sleep disordered breathing in people with spinal cord injury. Dr Graco’s research aims to improve the health and quality of life of people living with neuromuscular diseases, by increasing the uptake of evidence-based treatments of their sleep and breathing disorders. She currently works at the Institute for Breathing and Sleep (Austin Health, Melbourne) as an Implementation Scientist.
Mr Serajeddin Ebrahimian
Doctoral Researcher
University of Eastern Finland

Hypoxemia and arousals modulate nocturnal respiratory event-related cardiac function variations in obstructive sleep apnea patients

4:12 PM - 4:24 PM

Biography

Serajeddin Ebrahimian is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree at the Department of Technical Physics, The University of Eastern Finland, and the Diagnostic Imaging Center, Kuopio University Hospital, Kuopio. He joined the Sleep Technology and Analytics Research Group at the University of Eastern Finland in 2021. His research interests include the cardiovascular consequences of obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr Glenn Stewart
Senior Research Fellow
University of Sydney / Royal North Shore Hospital

Relationship between cardiovascular risk and pulse wave amplitude characteristics in a sleep clinic cohort

4:25 PM - 4:37 PM

Biography

Dr Glenn Stewart is a Senior Research Fellow within the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney and Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, Royal North Shore Hospital. His work is embedded within the Sleep Research Group at the Charles Perkins Centre and examines heart-lung interactions in health and disease with a major focus on the link between sleep-disordered breathing and cardiovascular disease.
Dr Amal Osman
Research Fellow
Flinders University

Targeted ansa cervicalis nerve stimulation restores airflow to airway narrowing in obstructive sleep apnoea during propofol anaesthesia

4:37 PM - 4:49 PM

Biography

Dr Osman is a Research Fellow at the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health, Flinders University. Her research involves investigating the development of simple clinical tools to measure upper airway collapsibility in obstructive sleep apnoea. She is interested in understanding the mechanisms that contribute to airway closure in sleep apnoea and developing new tools to predict responses to targeted and novel sleep apnea treatments.
