Towards Three Decades of Accurate, Sub-hectare Resolution Forest Biomass maps with Global DEM data and a Coarse Digital Terrain Model

1:30 PM - 1:45 PM

Abstract

Biography

Dr. Maciej J. Soja has almost 15 years of experience working with SAR-based mapping and monitoring of forests. Since 2009, he is involved in the development of the ESA BIOMASS mission, with a particular focus on the development of a global biomass mapping algorithm. He also has substantial experience with TanDEM-X and Sentinel-1 data, both for measurements of forest properties such as height and biomass and for monitoring of forest change. He has been involved in many international projects, including the GlobBIOMASS project from ESA and the Advanced SAR project from EU.

Dr Nancy Harris
Research Director
World Resources Institute

Chairperson

Biography

Nancy is the Research Director for Global Forest Watch (GFW), an international initiative originated by the World Resources Institute to provide improved information about the world’s forests by merging the latest technology with on-the-ground partnerships. Nancy identifies research priorities for GFW and leads the acquisition and generation of new data and analytical content. She collaborates with GFW staff and partners to produce and communicate original, policy-relevant research that further advances global understanding of critical drivers and dynamics of forest change. Prior to joining WRI led research at Winrock International on forest carbon cycling and spatial modeling of land cover change and provided technical guidance to multiple stakeholders on climate change mitigation options in the land sector. Nancy holds a B.S. in Biology and Environmental Studies from Tufts University and a Ph.D. in Systems Ecology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
