Mitral and Tricuspid Valve Surgery: Marginal patients
1:30 PM - 1:50 PMBiography
Professor David McCormack is a practising cardiothoracic surgeon based in the Te Manawa Taki region, with a focus on aortic, valvular, and multivalvular surgery. Much of his clinical work involves treating patients with rheumatic heart disease and other complex valve conditions, many from vulnerable or underserved communities.
He is an active member of the heart team, collaborating with cardiologists, imaging specialists, and anaesthetists to tailor care to each patient’s needs. He is committed to open, respectful decision-making—especially when navigating high-risk surgical options and emerging percutaneous therapies.
Nationally, David serves as the Clinical Lead for Procurement, Supply Chain, and Health Technology Management at Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora. He is also Deputy Chair of the National Clinical Practice Committee, which undertakes health technology assessments for novel and emerging therapies.
His practice is grounded in the belief that good outcomes come from teamwork, humility, and making the best decision for each patient—not just the most familiar one.
