Biography

Ms Kim (LaVerne) Bellear is a proud Bundjalung woman from the North Coast of New South Wales. She is the Chief Executive Officer of the Aboriginal Medical Service Co-operative Limited (AMS Redfern) – the first Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation in Australia. LaVerne is a respected leader in Aboriginal Health and an advocate for self-determination. She supports Aboriginal communities to lead and manage their own health care. Her career encompasses more than 30 years in health administration in both the public and not-for-profit sectors. LaVerne has held senior leadership and directorship roles, with a particular focus on Aboriginal Health reform that delivers culturally responsive services to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. She is the Deputy Chairperson of the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council (AH&MRC), a Director for Thirrili, a national provider of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suicide postvention support and assistance, she is the Co-Chair of the Sydney Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Health Partnership and a Member of the Board of Sydney Local Health District, one of the leading public health organisations in New South Wales. She is a former Director of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). LaVerne has had a key role in shaping Aboriginal Health policy at both state and national levels. She holds a Bachelor of Business, a Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research: Training and Practices, and a Graduate Diploma of Public Health from the University of New South Wales.
