Biography

A/Prof Johan Verjans is a clinician-scientist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Future Imaging Fellow at the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), and Platform Leader AI at SAHMRI. Trained via an MD-PhD at Maastricht University, he completed fellowships at UC Irvine, Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, and the University Medical Centre Utrecht, before joining the University of Adelaide in 2017. His subspecialty in prevention/lipids (RAH) and advanced cardiovascular imaging (Cardiac MRI and CT) at Jones Radiology. During his tenure as Deputy Director at AIML, the group grew from 2 to 40+ members, integrating clinical, biomedical, engineering and AI expertise to position Adelaide as a global leader in AI in healthcare. The group has won international technology challenges and partnered with Global teams at Roche, Siemens Healthineers, and Medtronic, earning a nomination as AI Centre in Medicine of the Year (AIMED 2022). His group develops methods in AI in systems biology and imaging, and AI implementation work, with collaborations with SA Pathology, SA Pharmacy, and multiple hospitals on landmark AI projects such as RapidX AI (world’s first AI RCT in Chest Pain), Automedic (SA Health’s largest AI deployment in Pharmacy), and Cardiomics(Automation of LDL guideline adherence). He has published 175+ papers, including NEJM, Circulation, JACC, JACC imaging, Nature Reviews Cardiology, and leading computer science venues CVPR, ICCV, IEEE TMI, MICCAI. HIs team won the first NIH global Medical VQA Challenge, early precursor of ChatGPT like models. A frequent keynote speaker at major cardiovascular and AI conferences, he has chaired national meetings, contributed to international AI in medicine guidelines, authored book chapters(incl first AI Book in Medicine), and serves on editorial boards including European Heart Journal Digital Health.
