Elevated Lp(a) is increasingly recognised as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, with growing interest in its role in risk assessment and management. As the clinical evidence base evolves, there is a need to support cardiologists in understanding the clinical trial landscape and its potential implications for clinical practice*. This symposium will provide an evidence based overview of the current and evolving clinical trial landscape investigating Lp(a), including ongoing studies evaluating novel therapeutic approaches. Expert faculty will discuss the strengths and limitations of available and emerging evidence, and explore how these findings may contribute to the broader understanding of cardiovascular risk. The session is designed to support clinicians in critically appraising emerging studies and considering how emerging evidence may contribute to the broader understanding of disease risk and inform future research and clinical perspectives, within the context of current standards of care. (*there are currently no treatments approved for Lp(a) lowering approved by the TGA in AU)

Biography

Stephen Nicholls is Director of the Victorian Heart Hospital, Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Professor and Director of the Victorian Heart Institute at Monash University. His research interests span from bench to bedside, focusing on mechanisms of atherosclerotic disease, plaque imaging and leadership of clinical trials of novel cardioprotective therapies. He is Past President of the CSANZ and Australian Atherosclerosis Society and is an inaugural Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences

Biography

David Sullivan, MBBS, FRACP, FRCPA, Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, NSW. David Sullivan is a physician and chemical pathologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown NSW. This includes conjoint appointment as Clinical Associate Professor, Sydney Central Clinical School. David has a long-term interest in lipid metabolism with particular emphasis on the dietary component of gene – environment interactions contributing to cardiovascular disease. He has been involved in the early use of most lipid-lowering interventions and has a particular interest in nutritional principles. His other main interest is the improvement of detection and management of severe inherited dyslipidaemia, such as Familial Hypercholesterolaemia. David has experience in several international clinical posts, including World Health Organization (WHO) Fellowship at the MRC Lipoprotein Unit, Royal Postgraduate School of Medicine, Hammersmith Hospital, London and co-ordination of international clinical studies from the WHO reference lipid laboratory in Wageningen, Netherlands. He has served on numerous clinical committees including the management committees of the LIPID and FIELD trials. Current research interests are focussed on biomarkers and post-prandial metabolism.

Biography

A/Professor Karam Kostner is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Queensland and Director of Cardiology at Mater Hospital Brisbane. A/Professor Kostner’s clinical interest is preventative cardiology and lipid disorders. He has also been actively involved in cardiovascular research for fifteen years, mainly in the area of lipoproteins, lipid lowering and atherosclerosis. Having published approximately 90 peer reviewed papers, four book chapters and several review articles and editorials, A/Professor Kostner has also given numerous invited lectures at cardiovascular meetings and is secretary of the Cardiac Society of Australia and NZ, Queensland branch.

Biography

Winthrop Professor Gerald F Watts is a leading authority in cardiometabolic medicine, serving as a Senior Academic in the School of Medicine at The University of Western Australia and Senior Consultant Physician at Royal Perth Hospital. A graduate of Imperial College London, his academic and clinical training in medicine and cardiovascular medicine has distinguished his career in cardiometabolic medicine and research. Professor Watts has authored over 800 scientific publications, including landmark studies in coronary disease, dyslipidaemia, and novel gene silencing therapies. His work has shaped international best practice for managing familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), as exemplified by his leadership of the FH Australasia Network and several national and international patient registries. He has received several awards, including the 2022 RT Hall Prize from the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, a 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Medical Research Foundation of Royal Perth Hospital, and the prestigious Myant Lecturer at HEART UK in 2024. He is Editor-in-Chief of Current Opinion in Endocrinology-Diabetes-Obesity and serves on the editorial boards of leading cardiology and lipidology journals. Professor Watts has attracted multiple competitive research grants and has led two Centres of Clinical Research Excellence. He has supervised over 60 students and early-career researchers, many now in senior academic and clinical roles. His ongoing clinical trials, leadership in international guidelines, and commitment to knowledge translation continue to improve care for people living with complex and high impact lipid disorders.
