Speaker
Prof Carolyn Ho
Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School
Brigham and Women's Hospital
Update in guidelines on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
10:30 AM - 10:50 AMBiography
Carolyn Ho is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Center, and Vice Chair of Faculty Development in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The overall goal of her work is to use mechanistic insights, careful clinical study, and multicenter collaboration to improve the care of patients and families with genetic heart disease.
Prof Diane Fatkin
Faculty
Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute
Update in genetics in dilated cardiomyopathy
10:50 AM - 11:10 AMBiography
Professor Diane Fatkin trained in Clinical Cardiology and Molecular Genetics and is currently Head of the Sr Bernice Research Program in Inherited Heart Diseases, in the Molecular Cardiology Division of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Sydney. She also holds appointments as Honorary Medical Officer in the Cardiology Department, St Vincent’s Hospital, and Professor (conjoint) in the Faculty of Medicine, UNSW Sydney. Her research is focused on understanding the molecular genetic basis of inherited cardiomyopathies, with a specific interest in familial dilated cardiomyopathy and familial atrial fibrillation. This work spans from clinical and genetics studies in families with inherited cardiomyopathies, to functional genomics in cell, mouse, and zebrafish models. A major objective of the team’s research is “bench-to-bedside” translation of new insights about disease mechanisms into personalised approaches to patient management.
Dr Stacey Peters
Cardiologist
Royal Melbourne Hospital
Update in risk stratification in arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy
11:10 AM - 11:30 AMBiography
Dr. Stacey Peters is a cardiologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She specializes in genetic cardiomyopathies. Her research evaluates genotype-phenotype interactions and the role of environment factors in the natural history of dilated and arrhythmic cardiomyopathies.
A/Prof Belinda Gray
Cardiologist
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
Sports participation for patients with cardiomyopathy
11:30 AM - 11:45 AMBiography
Dr Belinda Gray is a Cardiologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at University of Sydney. She is a Heart Foundation Future Leadership Fellow. Dr Gray completed her PhD in Genetic Heart Disease at University of Sydney and postdoctoral fellowship in Inherited Cardiac Conditions and Sports Cardiology at St George’s, University of London, UK. Dr Gray’s research focuses on risk stratification, genetics and prevention of sudden cardiac death in the young, including young athletes.
Dr Albert Henry
Research Officer
Garvan Institute of Medical Research
Unravelling heart failure through the lens of human genetics
11:45 AM - 12:00 PMBiography
Dr. Albert Henry is a Research Officer at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, NSW and holds academic position at UNSW and UCL, UK. His research focuses on understanding causal biology and identifying drug target in cardiovascular diseases using computational genomics and system biology approaches, including genome-wide association study, Mendelian randomisation, and polygenic risk score.
Prof John Atherton
Director of Cardiology
Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital
Chairperson
Biography
John Atherton (MBBS, PhD, FRACP, FCSANZ, FHFA) is a Pre-eminent Staff Specialist and Director of Cardiology at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) and Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Queensland.
Professor Atherton was one of four non-European official content reviewers for the 2016 European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Guidelines and is a European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association Ambassador. He chaired the 2018 National Heart Foundation of Australia/ Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) Heart Failure Guidelines, sits on the Therapeutic Guidelines Cardiovascular Expert Group and co-authored the first universal definition of heart failure.
Professor Atherton is Data Custodian for the Queensland Cardiac Outcomes Registry (QCOR)- Heart Failure and sits as a Director on the National Cardiac Registry Board. His clinical and research interests include investigating novel methods to detect pre-symptomatic heart disease, heart failure disease management, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and cardiac genetics.
Dr Vimal Patel
Consultant Cardiologist
Fiona Stanley Hospital and Royal Perth Hospital
Chairperson
Biography
Dr. Patel is a consultant cardiologist with a specialization in advanced heart failure, inherited heart muscle disease, and cardiac devices. He earned a postdoctoral research degree from University College London, where he investigated the role of fibrosis in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Following this, he completed a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation before establishing the inherited heart muscle disease program at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Western Australia. Dr. Patel remains actively engaged in research aimed at enhancing clinical outcomes and exploring the underlying pathways involved in the development of inherited cardiac diseases.
