Speaker
Dr Pradeep Natarajan
Director of Preventive Cardiology
Massachusetts General Hospital
Translational insights from the genetics of plasma lipids
10:45 AM - 11:15 AMBiography
Dr. Pradeep Natarajan is the Director of Preventive Cardiology and the Paul and Phyllis Fireman Endowed Chair in Vascular Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Associate Director of Personalized Medicine at Mass General Brigham, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Associate Member of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT.
His research program spans the MGH Cardiovascular Research Center, MGH Center for Genomic Medicine, and Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. He uses germline and somatic genetic variation to uncover new biology and enable enhanced clinical care for cardiovascular disease. He leads several consortia to use genetic epidemiology, large-scale sequencing studies, genotype-driven human investigation, and genetic testing implementation. He is an Associate Editor for JAMA Cardiology and Science Advances. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He has been awarded the Jeffrey M. Hoeg and Joseph A. Vita Awards by the American Heart Association for his contributions.
In tandem with his research efforts, Dr. Natarajan oversees clinical and training programs on the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases leading the MGH Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Center, and health system-wide innovative clinical paradigms via the MGB Personalized Medicine.
Dr Peter Fransquet
Research Fellow
Monash University
A polygenic risk score predicts atrial fibrillation in initially healthy older individuals without cardiovascular disease
11:15 AM - 11:30 AMBiography
Dr. Fransquet previously specialised in epigenetic biomarkers (particularly dementia) and epigenetic ageing, but has now moved to more broad ageing research in the field of genetic epidemiology.
Dr Cassia Kessler Iglesias
PhD Student/ Cardiologist
Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute
Atrial structure and function in subjects with DCM-associated truncating titin gene variants
11:30 AM - 11:45 AMBiography
Dr. Cassia Kessler is a Specialist Consultant Cardiologist with expertise in heart failure, heart transplant, inherited cardiomyopathies, and advanced cardiac imaging. Dr Kessler is a PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales and Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, her research focuses on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and cardiomyopathies. She has numerous peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Kessler works as a heart failure specialist at Northern Beaches Hospital.
Dr Paolo D'Ambrosio
Cardiac Electrophysiologist
St Vincent's Institute
Bradycardia and pauses in athletes: Prevalence, mechanisms and risks
11:45 AM - 12:00 PMBiography
Dr Paolo D’Ambrosio completed his medical degree at the University of New South Wales and undertook basic physician and cardiology advanced training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He then undertook 2 sub-speciality fellowships in cardiac electrophysiology and device implantation, spending 3 years at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and 2 years at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Whilst in Melbourne, he began his PhD on arrhythmias related to endurance exercise, supervised by Professor Andre La Gerche, Professor Jonathan Kalman & Professor Peter Kistler.
Currently in the final stages of his PhD, Dr D’Ambrosio has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and presented at national and international meetings. In addition to ablation for simple and complex cardiac arrhythmias and device implantation, he has a special interest in managing arrhythmias in athletes and highly active individuals.
Dr Natasha Gorrie
PhD Candidate, Cardiologist
Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute
The spatial distribution and pathogenicity of variants in the human transthyretin gene associated with amyloidosis
12:00 PM - 12:15 PMBiography
Dr Natasha Gorrie is a PhD Candidate and Cardiologist at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and UNSW. She completed training at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, with a focus on advanced heart failure and transplantation. She also completed a clinical and research fellowship in infiltrative cardiomyopathies at St Vincent’s and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in 2022. Her PhD on HFpEF and cardiac amyloidosis focusses on genetics, early diagnostic techniques and atrial myopathy and is supported by an NHMRC scholarship.
Assoc Prof Sonia Shah
Group Leader
University of Queensland
Chairperson
Biography
Sonia is a Group Leader and Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellowship based at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, The University of Queensland. Her research uses large-scale genomics and health data to improve the understanding of cardiovascular disease, with the goal to improve disease prevention and facilitate drug discovery. Her previous research uncovered a polygenic contribution in Familial Hypercholesterolemia, and she co-led the first large-scale genetic study of heart failure. Her current research is focused on addressing the diversity gap in cardiovascular research, with a focus on understanding risk in women, and she leads the South Asian Genes and Health in Australia study. She is the recipient of the Australian Academy of Science Ruth Stephens Gani Medal for her contribution to genetics research.
A/Prof Belinda Gray
Cardiologist
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
Chairperson
10:45 AM - 12:15 PMBiography
Dr Belinda Gray is a Cardiologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at University of Sydney. She is a Heart Foundation Future Leadership Fellow. Dr Gray completed her PhD in Genetic Heart Disease at University of Sydney and postdoctoral fellowship in Inherited Cardiac Conditions and Sports Cardiology at St George’s, University of London, UK. Dr Gray’s research focuses on risk stratification, genetics and prevention of sudden cardiac death in the young, including young athletes.
